It was John's first draft file and it was a very deep one. There were no sure-fire stars and a lot of talent across the board.
Here's how the different teams fared:
San Antonio Spurs:
1. San Antonio Spurs - Dom Poppa C 7'2'' 355 20 B C+ B- B- B A
2. San Antonio Spurs - Matthew Crittes SF 6'7'' 215 20 B- B+ C C+ C+ A
28. San Antonio Spurs - Henry Blount PG 6'3'' 207 23 C B- C+ B C C
Grade: A
It's hard to give the Spurs a bad grade. The commissioner took their first two picks and they were probably the consensus top-two guys. Blount had notes and looks like a solid backup PG, not much more than that, but it's the 28th pick.
Franchise-changing draft/lotto for the Spurs.
Sacramento Kings:
3. Sacramento Kings - Ronan Robinson PG 5'10'' 165 19 C B B B C- A
11. Sacramento Kings - Celso Lavezzolo SF 6'10'' 225 19 C+ C+ B- C+ C A
12. Sacramento Kings - Mason Bagaric C 7'4'' 274 23 C+ C C- C+ C+ C
Grade: A-
I don't love the Lavezzolo pick. While his ratings are studly, his notes were ugly. Bagaric on the other hand is the opposite, incredible notes, ugly ratings.
Ronan Robinson was seemingly the consensus third pick, so the Kings played it safe there.
A very interesting draft for them and they definitely didn't reach.
Atlanta Hawks:
4. Atlanta Hawks - Ryan Longes C 6'11'' 245 18 B- C- C- B- C B
8. Atlanta Hawks - Tegarey Barnes PF 6'9'' 240 18 B- C- C+ B C B
17. Atlanta Hawks - Logan Aridge PG 6'5'' 200 20 C B+ C B+ C- C
Grade: C
I'm not too sure about the Longes pick at 4. He can't rebound and while the rest of his notes were nice, it's hard to justify taking him that high, especially when there were noticeably better players around. Barnes being one of them. Barnes is 18 and has really solid notes. While he can't rebound either, picking him at 8 was a lot better.
Aridge is a nice looking player, but didn't have notes, so it's hard to say what he'll be like. There were definitely better players at 17.
New Orleans Hornets:
5. New Orleans Hornets - Kerem Kanter SF 21 6'8'' 225 C B C C+ C B
10. New Orleans Hornets - Merle Spurgeon SF 6'8'' 210 19 B C C+ C+ B+ B
Grade: C
The Kanter pick was high risk/high reward and it ended up being a low reward with his exceptionally average ratings. Should his real potential be high, he has a chance of being salvaged, but otherwise, he looks like a bust already.
Spurgeon on the other hand is a perfect fit with Quincy Acy. Good inside player, doesn't take three point shots, grabs boards, blocks shot. Looks like a match made in heaven
Indiana Pacers:
6. Indiana Pacers - Trevaughn Bostic SG 20 6'5'' 215 B- B C B- C- B
Grade: F
Got auto'd and ended up with a guy who shouldn't have been in the top-10. Really unfortunate.
Milwaukee Bucks
7. Milwaukee Bucks - Jonathan Voyles PF 21 6'10'' 245 A- C- F+ C+ C+ B
21. Milwaukee Bucks - Henry Ellenson PF 6'10'' 270 21 C+ B+ D+ C+ B- B
Grade: C
Not really high on either of these players, especially Voyles, but John selected him, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Ellenson was auto'd, but he looks like he could be a solid big to have in an outside system. Doesn't have any glaring flaws.
Utah Jazz
9. Utah Jazz - Bill Gallagher PG 6'4'' 180 22 C D B A C B
Grade: D
Yuck...
A point guard who has absolutely no offensive acumen.
It's going to be very hard for Gallagher to be a successful player in this league.
Other than being able to block shots and being an above average rebounder, there's not much else going for him.
TC will essentially decide his future right away.
New York Knicks
13. New York Knicks - Bastien Bouche SG 6'9'' 210 21 B- B- C+ C C- A
Grade: B
Hard not to like the Frenchman with a late lottery pick.
He's got good size, solid offensive attributes and upside.
I always hate guys with B- B- offense, because it seems hard for those grades to get over the hump, but if they do in this case, Andy will have a nice trade asset to add to his much improved team.
Phoenix Suns
14. Phoenix Suns - Adam Kestersen PF 6'10'' 240 20 B C+ C C C+ A
19. Phoenix Suns - Quincy Person SG 6'8'' 225 22 A D D C C+ B
Grade: B+
Kestersen looks like a solid player. If he was an SF, he'd have been a top-5 pick. It will all depend on how his offense and defense show up in the stat sheets.
Person will be a stud in an inside system. He'll always have glaring flaws, but his playing to his strengths should outweigh his weaknesses. Definitely a steal at 19.
Seattle Supersonics
15. Seattle Supersonics - Marshall Raab PF 7'1'' 200 19 C B+ D+ B C+ B
18. Seattle Supersonics - Julio Novo PG 5'3'' 145 17 C C C+ C+ D A
Grade: B-
Raab looks like a nice player in an outside system like the one that the Sonics are running. He's a fantastic fit for their team.
Novo is a boom/bust type. Right now, his ratings look horrible, but drafting a 17 year old player always screams near-100 potential.
L.A. Lakers
16. Los Angeles Lakers - Max Colella SG 6'7'' 230 22 C+ B+ B- C+ D+ B
Grade: F
See Indiana's grade for details. Ugly player/pick
Golden State Warriors
20. Golden State Warriors - Sven Dorak SF 6'6'' 240 22 B- C+ C A- C+ B
Grade: A
Perfect fit for the Warriors. They're a team that wants to win and Dorak can come in and start right away. Really good move to grab him this late in the first round.
Orlando Magic
22. Orlando Magic - Jaylen Steele SG 6'4'' 210 19 C+ A- C D+ D+ B
26. Orlando Magic - Egg Barlow C 6'10'' 260 23 B C- C- C+ B- C
27. Orlando Magic - Lou Harris SF 6'6'' 255 23 B- C+ B- C+ B C
Grade: C+
Mostly auto'd players, but decent ones.
Steele will be a nice offensive player and is an okay pick at 22. If his rebounding was higher, it would've been a much better pick.
Barlow and Harris are as good as you'll get from auto'd players.
Toronto Raptors
23. Toronto Raptors - Xerxes Ford C 6'11'' 295 22 C+ C+ D C+ B B
Grade: C
Ford would be great if he was an SF, but as a big man, he doesn't do the things that you'd like. A big man who can steal doesn't win ballgames - it's almost a useless stat for a big man to have. He'll be best served as a backup 3/4/5.
Still, not a bad pick. If he has upside, he could end up with some fun ratings.
New Jersey Nets
24. New Jersey Nets - Morris Toone SG 6'6'' 192 22 C B+ C+ C+ C- A
29. New Jersey Nets - Joshua McLellan PF 6'10'' 227 22 C C+ C C+ C+ A
Grade:: C+
Toone is a solid pick this late based on his notes. He'll be great in an outside offense very early on. Solid pick.
As for McLellan: No notes, high advertised potential. Not the sort of player you want on your roster for four seasons if he does nothing in TC. Big men with no inside also don't tend to do well, regardless of how high his real potential is.
L.A. Clippers
25. Los Angeles Clippers - Jordan Dale Peveto PF 6'9'' 245 21 B- D+ D B C+ B
Grade: B
Play was upset that his pick was auto'd, but I think that he was probably the best player available. Had solid notes and looks like a good depth big man.
I understand why Play was upset, but it's hard to second-guess the player that was auto'd. If Peveto ends up being a nice steal, there won't be much to be upset about.
