Has anybody here participated in overseas volunteer programs? I am considering doing it this summer for a month or two but want to hear some experiences first

I volunteered abroad once. She wasn't too happy.

My sister taught in Africa for a year and a half with a program called World Teach. If you want me to ask her anything, shoot a PM I guess.

Hmmm I'm looking for someone who taught in Asia or South America, those are the 2 main places I'm considering

Are you staying in a house with other volunteers? That is what I am planning on doing, I just want to know what that whole process is like and just your thoughts on everything in general

That is what I am planning on doing, I just want to know what that whole process is like and just your thoughts on everything in general Well, I don't volunteer- so not sure how helpful I can be. Obviously my situation is a bit different from what you'd be doing. The best advice I can give you is make sure you find a good program. There are quite a few questionable operations here (Asia in general), so make sure everything is legit and on the straight before you get here. When you figure out where you'd be interested in going I could probably give you some help on what the countries are like, I've done quite a bit of traveling around here. I'm sure either me or one of my friends has been to one of the places you are considering (if it's in Asia). Check out www.oxfamamerica.org. Not sure where you live, but they have some offices in the US. Could be helpful in selecting a good organization to volunteer with.

I already narrowed it to 2 organizations, they are the most affordable ones I found and they both have really good reviews. But I'm also trying to find free programs that provide you with housing and food. I don't really see why I should be paying when I'm the one volunteering my time, I mean the least they can do is offer me a place to stay and some food right? Its not like the cost of living in Asia is high at all.
It's not so much about the money but more so where that money is actually going. A 2 month volunteer program is around $1000, if most of my $1000 is being used to help people in that country then I don't mind paying, I just don't want my money going into some strangers pocket...

I suppose you could just have one of the organizations find you a decent affordable place to stay? But I find it hard to believe that you can't find a decent organization that is willing to pay for your housing.
