Mocking The Draft!
AUTHOR'S NOTE: The views here are my opinions based mostly on Broph's notes. If you disagree, make your own damn mock. It may not be perfect AND I may be wrong on a lot of my analysis but whatever.
Picks are reflected as of Day 90.
1. New York Knicks - Derrick Favors PF 82 245 18 Georgia Tech B- D+ F+ C+ C+ A
Analysis: This is a very difficult draft to forecast as there are five potential first overall picks. While Favors is the riskiest of the bunch, he can potentially be the most rewarding. Being 18 years of age and possessing the big-time upside, even though he is raw, would be too difficult to pass up (especially seeing well how guys like Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum who were similar when entering BBS have developed). The notes did say that he has a decent set of post moves along with elite athleticism to go along with the sky-high potential making this seem like the best pick on top of the draft.
2. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Philadelphia) - John Wall PG 76 196 19 Kentucky B- C B+ B- C- A
Analysis: The Wolves are a team which need pretty much everything and having two potential top picks would be the great way to address that. While Rubio might turn into a franchise PG over time, I feel like Wall would be a safer bet due to his overall talent. The ability to get inside is nice as is some ability to steal/block. If his outside game and handles can develop, he should be a top notch PG in this league. And given that his notes imply great upside, this has to be the best pick here.
3. Phoenix Suns - Evan Turner SG 79 214 21 Ohio State B- B- B- B- C+ A
Analysis: Phoenix is another team which should look to go BPA and as difficult as that is in a draft like this, the all-around skillset of Evan Turner seems highly intriguing. Of all the guys who could go number one overall, he probably is the most polished. He is able to score (though his three-point shot needs work), defend (both the inside and outside) and is probably already an elite rebounder at the SG spot. Seems like a nice fit in Phoenix (though they might flip him for something nice quick).
4. Dallas Mavericks - Greg Monroe PF 83 247 20 Georgetown B- C- C C+ C+ A
Analysis: While Dallas could go with Cousins, I feel like Monroe is the safer pick overall. Of all the bigs in this draft, he is the most polished. His ability to score inside and out is already very polished as is his ability to defend the interior. He is a solid defensive rebounder so the potential for that particular area to improve is there. He already seems very solid and at the age of 20, should improve more going forward.
5. Minnesota Timberwolves - DeMarcus Cousins C 83 292 19 Kentucky B C D C+ B- A
Analysis: With my top four in my mock going how they went, this is the most obvious pick. Maybe I am putting him here because I feel like it would be cool to re-unite Wall and Cousins. But regardless, I feel like he could be good. His ability to score inside already looks BBS-ready and should become even better going forward. The rest of his games does have some serious question marks but at 19 years of age, he could overcome them. On a team like Minnesota which could use anything, the young Kentucky duo of Wall and Cousins could make them nice going forward.
6. Indiana Pacers - Paul George SF 81 214 20 Fresno State C+ B C B C A
Analysis: George to the Pacers. Something about that just seems so right. Regardless, he seems like a guy who has all the tools to be a very nice player in BBS. Since Erbes is a very active GM who posts a lot and writes articles, I feel like this would be the best situation for PG. Furthermore, Erbes has a full four-year contract and with George being a potential very good number two, I feel like they could tank with him to get that number one and build a potentially dominant core for the future of BBS.
7. Cleveland Cavaliers - Gordon Hayward SF 80 211 20 Butler C+ B C+ C+ C- A
Analysis: I feel like the Cavs have to go BPA. I feel like Hayward is somebody who could be argued as that. While his rebounding is weak and he is probably best suited at playing a position which he is not allowed to play (in SG), he is a very solid player overall. He can score inside and out, defend the post and do a good job in taking care of the rock to go along with good upside. Those characteristics alone is why he makes the most sense to be picked here.
8. Utah Jizz - Eric Bledsoe PG 73 192 20 Kentucky C+ C+ C+ A- C B
Analysis: There is something about GAME being a Clipper fan which makes me think he will go with the real life Clipper. I feel like Bledsoe's absolute worst case scenario is a top notch defensive backcourt player (who can block shots ) and very good backcourt rebounder. Those two characteristics alone make him starter worthy. At the age of 20, I feel like his offense could improve but even if it does not, he is a good player alongside Russell Westbrook.
9. Denver Nuggets - Tibor Pleis C 85 235 20 Germany C+ C+ C C+ C+ A
Analysis: I feel like the Nuggets are a team which have their backcourt of the future and could afford to roll the dice on a high risk-high reward type of player. He has solid all around letter grade ratings and while I realize that it does not mean much, I feel like somebody in the top 10 is going to spend 400 posts to obtain his notes (and then regardless of what they are, just takes him). He is 20 and the little information we have on him say that he has been developing well. If he continues on that path, he could be a solid big. I don't know, had to place him somewhere.
10. Washington Wizards - Xavier Henry SG 78 210 19 Kansas C+ C+ D+ C+ C- A
Analysis: The Wizards are an awkward team because they have a couple of very nice players in Francis/Bosh but are overall not a very good team. This is a team which really needs to roll the dice and a young 19 year old prospect could be the answer. Athletic, solid rebounder, nice perimeter defender. If the team which drafts him puts some work into his offense and hopes for some big training camps, he could be a very nice player overall.
11. Toronto Raptors - Daniel Orton C 82 269 19 Kentucky C+ D D+ C+ C+ A
Analysis: This is another team which has some good players and can probably afford to roll the dice to add talent. They are fairly weak up front so a big-time boom or bust 19 year old big might pay off for them. He is very raw and needs a TON of work but the gamble could pay off. If it does, this team can become SCARY going forward.
12. Utah Jazz (from Chicago) - Patrick Patterson PF 81 240 21 Kentucky B- B- D+ C C A
Analysis: He has Westbrook/Gordon, I had him taking Bledsoe earlier. The BPAs seem to be guards but that route really makes no sense for them. Pat Pat might be the best way to go with an attempt to convert him into an SF. A 21 year old boom or bust is usually a bad idea but his scoring ability is existent so there is hope of him becoming a solid player overall.
13. Denver Nuggets (from Memphis) - Jeremy Lin PG 75 200 21 Harvard C+ B- B B C- B
Analysis: To close out my lotto, I could have gone a variety of ways but I feel like Linsanity is the best player here despite his handling issues. With Rose being the Duggets point guard of the future (and Roy their shooting guard of the future), Lin could be a backup 1 & 2 for them and probably excel in that position. He can score from inside and out, he can defend the perimeter well and is a decent rebounder with good upside. Outside of handles and athleticism, he is the complete package.
14. Atlanta Hawks - Avery Bradley PG 75 180 19 Texas B- C+ C B+ D+ B
Analysis: This team has a glaring hole at the SG spot and Bradley looks like he can be a very good one. He defends at a high level, has the ability to get inside with an outside, particularly three-point shot and handles which require work. I honestly do not feel like he would fall to 14th and rank him as a player higher than where I am placing him but with the teams above requiring different needs, I could see him falling here. If he does fall here, he would be a steal. He is a very good player at 19 and should get better going forward.
15. Milwaukee Bucks - Ekpe Udoh PF 82 237 23 Baylor C C- D B+ C+ B
Analysis: I feel like the Bucks are a team which need bigs and depth. Epke is the type of player who can satisfy both. While his offense is weak, he does have a decent jump shot. What makes him really stand out is his defense. It is already at a very high level rated at a B+ and he has the ability to block shots which the majority of GMs here covet. He seems to be the perfect pick here for Milwaukee.
16. Nawlins Hornets - Wesley Johnson SF 79 206 22 Syracuse C B- C B- C A
Analysis: They have decent players at every position and really seems like a team which can afford to roll the dice on the final boom-or-bust prospect left in my mock. Wes is a very interesting player. He can shoot from the outside and is a decent defensive player who can block shots at a higher rate than you expect from a wing. I feel like his inability to get inside limits him to being not much more than a role player, especially being fairly raw at the age of 22. While I am not all that high on him, he does look like he can be a very solid role player overall.
17. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Orlando) - Ed Davis PF 82 227 21 North Carolina C+ D+ D- B- B- B
Analysis: Cleveland is one of those teams which looks to have a nice young nucleus at the 1-3 positions but desperately in need of bigs. Which is why a real life Raptor for a Raptors fan in Traves makes the most sense here. Davis is probably one of the most well-rounded bigs in this draft and looks on his way to being a solid player. Good pickup in the mid-late first round.
18. Portland Trailblazers (from Boston) - Larry Sanders PF 82 222 21 VCU C D D B- C+ B
Analysis: The defending champion Portland Trailblazers are a quite stacked team overall which should be looking to make moves to strengthen their bench. This is why I feel like Sanders seems like the best pick here. He can block, steal and rebound. That alone makes him a valuable reserve for any squad.
19. Indiana Pacers (from Seattle) - Pape Sy SF 78 185 22 France C C B C B- C
Analysis: This is a team which needs pretty much everything. I had them taking Paul George earlier in the draft so it makes sense for them to go with a big or a guard. Sy is the most interesting prospect in this draft. He is an SF allowed to start at PG giving him a MAJOR rebounding advantage. If he develops correctly, he could be a potential triple-double threat. While he has holes in his game and limited upside at 22, he could become a decent starting PG due to his major rebounding advantage and solid handles.
20. Portland Trailblazers (from Los Angeles Lakers) - Landry Fields SF 79 210 22 Stanford B- C C+ B C B
Analysis: Once again, they are a stacked team which should be looking to add depth pieces. I had them taking Sanders earlier so a wing here would probably make the most sense. Fields has great strength, is a good defensive player, good rebounder with the ability to get inside. There are not many glaring holes in his game (as the notes describe him). Honestly re-reading his notes makes me wish I had placed him higher but I do not even know who to change as I am going mostly by need.
21. Atlanta Hawks (from San Antonio) - Latavious Williams SF 80 205 21 D-League B B D C C- C
Analysis: Nice looking ratings, no notes. Could be worth rolling the dice on. In hindsight, Atlanta probably would have been better off dealing this pick instead of holding on it tbh.
22. New York Knicks (from Los Angeles Clippers) - Hassan Whiteside C 84 227 21 Marshall C D D- B+ C+ C
Analysis: No notes but he has B+ defense and C+ rebounding. He probably is a great shotblocker because he is Hassan Whiteside. Should be worth a shot here.
23. New York Knicks (from Golden State) - Jeremy Evans SF 81 196 22 Western Kentucky C+ C- C C+ B+ C
Analysis: I had them taking two bigs earlier in this draft so a wing probably makes the most sense here. Evans looks highly interesting due to his ability to hustle and grab boards. He has a solid jumper but outside of those characteristics, he does not offer much. Should be interesting to see how he sims.
24. Portland Trailblazers - Greivis Vasquez PG 78 211 23 Maryland C+ B- B C D+ B
Analysis: Like the Knicks, the Blazers are another team which has three firsts in this draft. I had them taking Sanders and Fields earlier so a point guard probably makes the most sense. Vasquez looks like he can be a solid backup.
25. Washington Wizards (from Miami) - Cole Aldrich C 82 236 21 Kansas C+ C- D B- C+ B
Analysis: Aldrich looks like a solid backup big who could be a decent fit for this squad. Not a bad pick here.
26. Dallas Mavericks (from New Jersey) - Jordan Crawford SG 76 198 21 Xavier B- B- D+ C D+ B
Analysis: A good jump shooter with high volume (probably too high given his lack of overall abilities). Seems like he could be a good microwave type scorer off the bench. Unfortunately does not offer much else but seems solid this low in the first round.
27. Detroit Pistons - Alexy Shved PG 78 178 22 International C+ B C+ C D+ B
Analysis: He seems like a very average player. Guess he would be a solid backup for this already stacked team.
28. Houston Rockets - Jarvis Varnado PF 81 210 22 Mississippi State C C- D B C C
Analysis: Yeah I could use him. I'll take him if he is here.
29. Sacramento Kings - Tiny Gallon PF 81 296 19 Oklahoma B+ D- F+ C C C
Analysis: Everybody with notes is gone so time to roll the dice. Guy is 6'9” 296 lbs and named Tiny lol. He has B+ inside, probably worth a shot.
