2009 BBS Mock Draft
Top 13 picks for the 09 Draft
13. Detroit Pistons (from Nuggets) - Rodrigue Beaubois
Not gonna lie to you, I completely forgot about Roddy while I was writing this, but he is still kind of an enigma. His ratings look sick, but he looks like a pure 2 rather than a 1. His lack of notes makes me feel like he is kind of irrelevant, and his C handle is obviously pretty bad as a point. Playing him at the 2 would make him beyond undersized at just 6 feet tall. His elite defense and good scoring should be enough to make him a contributor though, its just a question of what kind of role he is going to have, especially since we don't know what kind of C that handle is - is he going to be a turnover whore?
12. Atlanta Hawks - Lester Hudson
At 25 years old, and B B+ scoring, Hudson is a pretty intriguing prospect. He has no notes, but based on real life, I doubt that inside rating is loaded on jumping. He is probably going to be a pretty effective scorer off the bat. So if Demar (or whoever they draft) falters out of the gate, they can have a guy who is going to be able to give you points in bunches. If you throw some points into his scoring too, you might have an elite bench scorer/5th starter. Not bad in the late lottery.
11. Utah Jazz - Marcus Thornton
The draft is starting to get to the nitty gritty at this point. Utah won't have a ton of options at this pick, when you consider how much they seem to need. They have Westbrook, but this is a team that looks like they need a go to scorer. Is Thornton going to be a go-to scorer? Maybe, probably not, but at 11 what are the odds of getting that player? Probably not high - might as well take a shot at it with Thornton.
10. Dallas Mavericks (from Wizards) - DeJuan Blair
Blair would be a seamless fit for the Mavs next year, who might be pushing for a playoff berth. Blair does have his weaknesses, but he is going to be able to come in and contribute immediately for this Mavericks team. His upside has to be the biggest question here, because he has pretty nice ratings. I think he is a nice prospect when you're picking this late though. Taj Gibson is another guy who might get a look at this pick.
9. New Orleans Hornets - Jrue Holiday
This team is kind of a random assortment of players right now, and I think Holiday fits in kind of nicely as a long-term project. Crawford is pushing 30 now, and Holiday is a player that is going to be 3-4 years away from contributing. 19 year old with probably close to 100 potential is pretty intriguing, especially for a team that probably isn't going to be looking at guys to make an immediate impact right away.
8. Atlanta Hawks (from Spurs) - Demar Derozan
With the wing and the point guard spots filled, and a lack of quality big in this draft, I think the Hawks go with the high flying swing man here in Demar Derozan. Demar is probably going to score pretty effectively off the bat, and will make a nice fit at the 3 with Gay at the 2. Gay can stroke it, which will hopefully sort of make up for some of Demar's deficiencies in that regard. A Gay-Demar-Lowry trio is pretty nice I think.
7. Phoenix Suns - Ty Lawson
I think at this point the Suns probably just go with the best player available in Ty Lawson, who has really as good of ratings as anyone in the draft. The biggest question here is probably related to what sort of upside he has. Regardless, just a +4 in his career will bring him to B- A- B B- which is pretty solid. Lawson may actually not be available at this pick, it really depends on what the teams ahead think of him, but the Suns may be walking away with a really nice player at 7.
6. Orlando Magic - Ricky Rubio
I think Rubio would be an amazing fit in Orlando. This is a team who probably should have been a bit lower on the draft order, but that is beside the point - this team is in golden shape. With two guys who are going to give you close to 60 a night moving forward, Orlando can afford to take a point who isn't going to score. With Darko manning the center, and Ibaka probably looking to be a key cog moving forward, Rubio is just a natural fit. They may go with Lawson here too, but I think Play is a huge fan of him in real life, and probably here. This would be a perfect and exciting fit for Orlando, if they don't move the pick.
5. Philadelphia 76ers - Steph Curry
A Dwight and Curry screen and roll game? Sign me up. This kid can flat out shoot, and while his defense and handles are still a work in progress, I think this kid has some major potential. His notes say his potential is suspect, so he might need an article or two worth of help, but he looks pretty sick. One thing is for sure, Philly can't afford to miss on this pick, they need to get a stud to put beside Howard, before they wind up picking in that shitty 8-12 range by virtue of Howard being so sick.
4. Dallas Mavericks - Brandon Jennings
With Paul Millsap and OJ Mayo in the fold, the Mavs have a lot of options at this pick, since they aren't necessarily in dire need of a franchise changing player.
Ultimately, I see them going with Brandon Jennings. Dragic is nice, but is he a guy who can possibly be a franchise point? I think they look long and hard at Rubio at this pick too, and he might be a sick pick. But Jennings is a guy who is going to give you buckets too, and this is a team in dire need of scoring. A Jennings - Mayo backcourt is sexy and I think that is who we see Dallas go with.
3. Minnesota Timberwolves - Tyreke Evans
Minny is rumoured to be shopping this pick, but I'd be shocked if the pick gets moved when its all said and done. There are a number of guys who could go at this pick, and 3 is where it starts to get dicey, since 1 and 2 are probably pretty set.
If I am Minny I am probably looking long and hard at Tyreke Evans. For one, the guy is a stud in almost every sim I've seen him in (could just be a coincidence), and his ratings are really interesting. His future probably lies in the 2 spots, but his size at the 1 is also intriguing. His handles are quoted to be bad, but are we talking 4.5 turnovers a game bad, or are we talking 3 turnovers a game? I just think the kid is too intriguing to pass up at 3, especially for a Minny team starving for talent.
2. New York Knicks - James Harden
I think there are players with sexier ratings that might be available, but Harden has the name, and has really good notes. It doesn't look like he has many, if any, major holes in his game. His D is suspect but will get better over time. He is going to score well off the bat, and with some extra points put into it along with training camps, the kid should be a stud. Spence said he has will likely be a 20-5-5 player, and really, that is a pretty slick start to a rebuild.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers - Blake Griffin
It is pretty much a certainty that Blake Griffin will be the first overall pick - it would be pretty shocking if it was anyone else (though there are some keepers right after him).
Blake brings it all to the table with little to no holes in his game. He is going to probably give you pretty close to 20 and 10 off the bat, and his handle looks pretty decent too for a big. His jump shooting is going to be shaky but hopefully some work can fix it to at least be passable. He is also going to defend pretty well (at least relative to his real life counterpart). Kid is a stud and whoever gets first will be lucky.
