1. You are currently 5-8 but made moves to pick up Marion and Maglorie. What was your thought process through these deals? What other moves must be made or are you done?
At the time, I had Wallace, Griffin, and Gooden as my post rotation and I thought they wouldn't be good enough. So I looked around at the trade blocks and noticed Magloire was probably going pretty cheap, so I went and got him. I wasn't sold on my rebounding and I wanted to get my blocks up, so Magloire solved both those problems in one trade.
As for Marion, I almost didn't pull the trigger. I knew that without Marion, I would probably make the CY anyway. I was really wary of taking on that expiring contract too, with Dirk also expiring at the end of this season. However, I also knew that if I didn't trade for Marion that we would not contend. I would've loved to keep Gordon, but it's better to go for the ring, especially in my CY.
After trading for these two, I was pretty much done, but then I noticed Lue was garbage even in the limited minutes he played, so I needed a backup point guard. So I dealt for Ramon Sessions. After that deal, I think I'm truly done and set for a run.
2. You are one of many teams in your CY. What is your thought process being in the CY? Does it make life any easier/harder knowing that there are others as well?
I was pretty scared, because I have never been in my contract year before. Anything can happen to a team during 82 games. Knocking on wood here, but I've seen injuries, and teams just flat out sucking, which is why I have always tried to avoid the contract year. On the other hand, I was also pretty confident because I had some really good assets to flip, and I knew there were a number of GM's who wanted to rebuild.
I guess having four other GM's in the CY with me made life easier for me in a way because it forced me to get deals done early. I didn't have to worry or nitpick over which deals to make, I just went out and got shit done because I knew that if I didn't, another CY team might snap up the player that I needed which could have really hurt me. It has also made my life harder because Portland and Golden State are trying to win now too, which has turned the West into a bit of a dogfight from top to bottom.
3. Were you planning on tanking for 3 years and going into the CY or did shit just not work out? What happened along the way?
It was just bad GM'ing. I traded a future pick of mine for a pick during a draft. I then got bored and traded Baron Davis to Maniac for Lou Williams and Telfair who looked really good at the time. Telfair ended up being a huge bust, but luckily Lou was the real deal. Anyway, I made that deal mid-season and didn't expect us to bottom out that badly as we were in the playoff hunt at the time. So what happens? We bottom out, and Biggie ends up with a top 5 selection because I forgot to protect the pick. So, I had a bottom 5 record that season and didn't have a pick in the draft, so that put me behind by quite a bit.
I had to tank hard the next few seasons to pick up more assets. The season after trading Baron, I had the 6th pick in the draft, having dropped two spots from where I was projected to pick. This was my saving grace as Spenny had decided to bust Oden and Young, who were the players in my pick range. I had to settle for Conley and he immediately had a +4 training camp at the age of 19 which drove up his value like crazy. He doesn't look that great now, but he allowed me to trade for Marbury.
The next season, with Conley as a great tanking point guard, we were the worst team all season and ended up with the #1 selection. I had written an article earlier that season, with one of the questions being what players would you trade the #1 pick for. I saw this as a good opportunity to gauge interest in the pick so I wrote out a big list of players who could help me greatly. Broph promptly responded he would be down for a Nowitzki/#1 swap, and I remembered this when we did win the lottery. The rest is history.
4. You are not the only West team in your CY. Portland and Golden State went through the Knicks roster and picked up some solid players, amongst other moves they have made. Let's say there is one spot left, which of you 3 take it and why? Who's looking the weakest right now?
Knocking on wood again, but barring injury and realistically speaking, Golden State and Memphis are in for sure. Portland is looking like the weakest Western contract year team, but they also have a great chance to make it as they have picked up some big time players lately, especially Curry who has come out of nowhere to dominate the league. If there is one spot left for all three of us, I expect that we would make it because I am confident in my team and their abilities. We have two top 15 players overall, a top 5 point guard, and good depth to complement them.
5. The Bucks are in there CY but you wouldn't even know it. What moves do they have to do? At this point, do they even have a shot?
The Bucks only have one move to make to secure their playoff berth, and that is to trade Sergio Rodriguez for a proven point guard. I'm sure they could get someone good as Sergio looks really promising, and if they added a 1st or two, that would only sweeten the pot. The thing is, out of all those bubble teams out East, the Bucks have the highest turnovers per game at 15.9, and Sergio is the main culprit, coughing it up 3.6 times per game. With their top two options in Azubuike and O'Neal already turning it over about five times a game, that's just too much to stomach. They also should consider moving Noah if an upgrade at center is available because a good shotblocker/rebounder would do wonders for them.
At this point, the odds are split between the Bucks, Heat, Hornets, Hawks, Wizards, and Magic as to who will take the seventh and eighth seed out East. They all look flawed and mediocre. Orlando has been wracked by injury, with Darko only playing one game so far, and Peja just got taken out for thirty games, so they probably have the lowest chance. Out of the remaining five teams, Bucks have the best player in Jermaine O'Neal who is putting up absolutely ridiculous numbers, so on that alone, I think JO will carry Milwaulkee on his back to the playoffs.
Going to give the Heat some props here as they just had a good sim after I finished writing this answer. They look like a solid team, just need some more depth and perhaps an upgrade at PF.
6. Spencer needed a vacation and Marty stepped in. How has he done thus far?
Marty's done a great job, and for the most part, BBS hasn't skipped a beat. Big credit to the GM's that stuck around and kept posting because I thought this league was done for when I read Spenny's post. And then Marty stepped up and we got the draft done by the next day, and things got rolling and we're back in a good groove.
I didn't like Styro getting axed, but I guess he was being disrespectful and Marty did give other GM's depth chart warnings so Styro was fair game. He should probably replenish the waiting list prospects if he is going to take a hardline approach to hiring/firing. And sometimes put the carrot before the stick when dealing with problem GM's. Other than that, great job.
7. Greeme quit because he lost Tyson Chandler then felt Marty had something to do with it or something to that extent. Should Marty have been so forgiving of Greeme?
Sure. Greeme is a really active and solid GM, it would hurt BBS to lose him, especially at this juncture without Spenny running things. Obviously emotions were running high (lol) after losing Chandler and he lashed out, blaming whoever he could. He doesn't usually cause problems and brings more to the table here than he takes away, so I have no problem with him having a somewhat longer leash.
8. Going back to the CY thing, and maybe some calling out, were there any moves out there that you missed out on because a GM was being "stingy" or just plain dumb?
Hahahahahahahah. I asked Game what it would take for Redd and he initially asked for something really ridiculous. 'nuff said? Nah, I talked him down to a more reasonable price, and I think we're good, but then he messages me back saying he has a better offer for Redd from the Lakers and that I should step my offer up if I want Redd. I'm like nah, I'm good, as I now had my sights set on Marion. A few days later, I get curious and ask Nanz did he ever offer that for Redd, and he's like no, he talked to Game awhile ago, not recently. I lol'd. Anyway, it worked out for both of us as Game ended up with Westbrook but it's funny and good to see Game trying to get the upper hand by any means necessary.
While doing the next question, I thought of Erbes and the ridiculous prices he wanted me to pay for Jason Terry and Vince Carter. Yeah, that was pretty funny also. Probably more stingy/dumb than what Game did as Game ended up with Westbrook in the end.
9. Is there any team out there that really needs to rebuild?
Just a quick glance, but Wizards need to get their pick back this season and just bottom out. They probably aren't going to make the playoffs this season anyway so keeping all those vets is pointless. Pacers are getting really old and aren't that good, they need to get their 2010 pick back and rebuild after this season. Erbes better stop overvaluing Carter or he will end up maxing him this offseason and have no one willing to trade for him later on. Other than these two teams, I don't see any teams in that bad of a situation.
Of course while I am in the midst of writing this the Pacers have an 8-0 sim LOL. I stand by everything else I said though, they do need to rebuild after this season.
10. We have had a rather big GM turnaround. Any GM hirings that you disagree with?
Not sure. Never really been in a league with Steve, was he the dude with the bald guy from Lost as his avatar? I know Donatello is good. Game brings the lolz. Jah is a steady guy. Sucks to single anyone out as I don't have a problem with any of them, but probably UKFan because I've seen him disappear from leagues before. Maybe not multiple times, but I know for sure there was one time. Hopefully that doesn't happen in this league.
11. Who will be the Eastern conference champs? Who is the biggest wildcard?
Sad to say, but Boston is still the favorite to come out of the East. They miss Shaq, but Pierce is the type of wing scorer they've never had, which brings a whole new dimension to that team. Of course, they're no longer as tough to beat without the twin towers, and I could see an upset playing out.
I don't see the Pistons as a playoff threat yet because their post play is really weak and they don't take care of the ball. Pacers have that overall old man strength, but their post play is weak. Heat could do some things if they upgrade on Glen Davis. The Nets and Raptors are threats because I think dj and Greeme are top 3 depth chart tacticians in BBS along with Hype. Bulls might be -the- wildcard because they have the best defense in the league by a country mile, and Kobe.
12. Who will be the Western conference champs? Who is the biggest wildcard?
Tough call, from the 1-8 seed, I think the only team that couldn't win the West is Utah. It's tough to have a favorite and a wildcard when seven teams look this good with different strengths and weaknesses. Gun to my head, Rockets are going to the Finals. Big time post play, Royal Ivey is dominating, and they've been there before (I know that's not a reason). Wildcard? I'm gonna go with my team. Like I said before, two top 15 players, a top 5 PG, and good depth. If we stay healthy, we are going to be a big problem.
13. The BBS champs will be?
Out of my two favorites from each conference, I think Houston finally has what it takes to win it all. Houston in 7, Royal Ivey Finals MVP.
14. The NBA Grizzlies have the best record in the league. Forget playoffs, are they making the finals?
I think they've proven that they can play with anyone in the league, and in the playoffs, anything can happen so yeah, I think they are going to the WCF at least this season, and the Finals are not out of the question. I don't think anyone saw the Mavs coming in 2011, yet they pretty much ran over everyone. Grizzlies main strength is their great chemistry they've developed between their starting 5 over the last couple of years, and Hollins has done a great job interweaving the bench pieces this season. However, I think they need a proven shooter or two like Korver as I'm not sure Ellington and Pondexter can keep shooting like this. Bayless I am less worried about.
15. How is your football/baseball team doing?
I used to be a big baseball guy, loved the Braves. I like trolling CC and Spenny and rooting for whoever plays the Giants though. My all-time favorite player Chipper Jones retired, which sucks.
I refuse to talk about the Chargers with my friends until Norv Turner is fired, cannot believe he is still the head coach of my favorite team. The worst thing is my friends are all bandwagon Patriots/Niners/Packers fans. Ugh, disgusting.
16. We usually have "pig" story's which are fun/full of fuckery. Give us an "insane" story. Don't bitch out and hold back.
Mehh I guess this story has two parts
I was at the bar with a few friends and I'm doing my own thing aka getting wasted off $1.75 beers while they're off spitting game somewhere. So near the end of the night one of them comes to me and says yo we need you to jump on this ugly chick for us. I'm like meh whatever. I go meet them, her friends are decent but she's pretty much a 3/10 which means bad times ahead for insane.
We go back to one of the girls' house, drink more, and we all split off into different rooms. She gives me head while I finger her, and I'm ready to put it in but she says she doesnt wanna. I'm tired and wasted so I don't argue. I go take a piss, wash my hands and then fall asleep.
I wake up earlier than anyone and gtfo. I get in the cab and a few minutes later I look down at my hand and notice there's some red shit at the base of my index and middle finger. Take a closer look and its fucking blood, I almost puke then and there. Apparently this bitch was on her period and didn't trouble to tell me so.
Fast forward a few months later, some friends and I are at the club. Like always we split off to do our own thing, I'm doing laps around the place scoping out what I like. While I'm walking through the dance floor this girl bumps me on purpose. Cute face, large bum, I'm thinking nice, this is the one for tonight, so I walk away and come back a bit later.
She dances on me for a bit and then we go to a corner and make out for a bit. Her friends want to take her away though and that's when trouble starts. I notice that one of her friends is the fucking girl that was on her period. I point at her and ask is that your friend? Shes says yeah that's my cousin. Im like Shit, so we exchange numbers and I ask her name before I leave, and she tells me. Her name is really unusual and took me back to the story of some crazy bitch that tried to trap one of my good friends with a fake pregnancy, who had the exact same name.
I go outside and call my friend, to try to confirm it. And yeah, it was her. Sad times, however I was still fucking hammered so when I went back inside she found me and I got with her again despite knowing it was this crazy bitch that almost fucked my friend over. Left the club and she tried to text me the next few days but I ignored her and lost her number. Then a couple of days ago, I saw her on the bus. Luckily I was wearing glasses and had my hat low, don't think she recognized me. My friends know all about this and they will never let me live this down.
Cliffs:
