1. It seems that trolls are really sensitive to getting trolled; play blew up at game and Marty seemed to lose it. How do you explain this phenomenon? Do you think that Marty quit because of the storm or because of his team's situation or a little of each?
Channeling my inner psychologist: people with combative personalities usually try to defend themselves when they feel slighted. Sometimes they can let things slide, but it builds up, and when the barbs start hitting a little close to home, they gotta defend themselves. Went off on a little tangent there, but I think the way Game types is a little infuriating because even with all his horrible grammar and odd punctuation, what he says does make sense if you really rack your brain. So not only do you have to exercise your brain to comprehend what he's saying, at the end of it, you're reading an on-point insult, so you're doubly enraged.
I actually didn't think that he had quit, I thought Spencer made the executive decision because Marty couldn't get online and the team was floundering. But if he did quit, he quit because of the storm. 100%. His roster was looking a little wack, but if he had even a little time to make some deals, he would've been in the clear. But he didn't have that luxury because of the hurricane, so I'm inclined to give him a pass for this one. Plus he took back the Sonics when he was able to, so he gets points for that as well.
2. While we are on the subject of play- common perception still has him as a top gm but he seems to have struggled lately. He guaranteed a ship this year and currently isn't even in the playoffs. Where does he rank currently among gms?
I actually don't know if he's struggling. It's true he's taken time to build his team up, but LeBron was extremely raw coming into the league and it would've taken time regardless for LB to mature fully. Cenk was a steal and a half, and adding Gordon was an under-rated move. He experimented with his depth chart for a bit, then acquired KG and promptly went 5-0. I don't know about them winning a championship because of Shaq and Duncan still being stupid good, but I suspect by the end of this season they will be a contender and a very tough out for any team out East.
As for where he ranks, he's still top 5 skill-wise and from his past performance. I think people get at him more for his stagnant seasons because of his personality. Everyone goes through funks, but his are magnified because he talks the same amount of shit to everyone no matter how his team is doing. Also, it's a case of people liking to see Goliath fall. He was dominant for so long, so when he's not having the same amount of success, GM's who he trod on before will start to grow bolder and throw more shots.
3. There are a ton of good young pgs in this league. Ignoring contracts, rank the following in terms of value. Deron Williams, Rajon Rondo, Tony Parker, Leandro Barbosa, Cenk Akyol, Gilbert Arenas, Kyle Lowry, Royal Ivey, Jose Barea, Mike Conley.
1. Cenk Akyol- Out of all the PG's producing significantly, he's the youngest. High volume and high efficiency, and is the best at taking care of the ball. Easily #1.
2. Deron Williams- Slightly edges Rondo.
3. Rajon Rondo- That long range shooting is atrocious. Weird he doesn't really get steals.
4. Gilbert Arenas- Pretty under rated. Puts up big numbers and takes great care of the ball.
5. Tony Parker- Just below Arenas. Parker is on a better team but those percentages are kind of ugly.
6. Kyle Lowry- Getting into the realm of the project point guards. Edge over Conley because of ball handling ability.
7. Mike Conley- Turnover issues. However, 19 years old and just had a huge TC.
8. Leandro Barbosa- Doing numbers on a weak team, likely done improving. Not impressed.
9. Royal Ivey- Percentages are bad, not a volume scorer. Great at taking care of the ball though.
10. Jose Barea- C potential, big turnovers. No thanks.
4. Any chance that mike Conley will be on your team next year?
First of all, he needs to chill with the turnovers. I'll see by preseason if he gets better with that or not. If not, he's a goner, can't have a TO whore of that caliber on my team while I'm trying to make my contract year. It sucks I have to get rid of him though, he's going to be such a beast when he develops. I am going to regret not keeping that 06 pick of mine, really set back my rebuild and forced my hand to trade Conley in the future.
5. Are you worried about making your cy in the west? On the one hand you have few pieces- Williams, Conley, your pick, minny pick. On the other hand you are in the west.
I'm not worried at all. Those four assets, along with a lot of cap should be more than enough to get me through. Even if I swing on all those studs in free agency and miss, there's still a lot of solid players who can help me make it through. I could probably keep Lou if I wanted to, but Conley is 90% out the door. My pick should be very high (knock on wood), so I will be getting a big time player who I can move if they're not ready after TC, or keep if they're looking good enough to contribute meaningfully. With Minnesota's pick, it's a deep draft, and they still could flounder, so you never know. However, I'm not opposed to moving the Wolves pick for help as well.
6. If you had to pick one player right now to win this year, who would it be?
No question, it's Tim Duncan. In four seasons, he's already racked up a shitload of MVP awards, both playoff and regular season. Defensive player of the year, all league first team nods, you name it, Timmy has achieved it. Now he's doing something like 28 PPG 15 RPG 3 BPG on 50% from the field. How could you go wrong in the playoffs rocking with that as your best player?
7. Looking back a year, how did ashes make out on the Kobe Bryant deal
It's hard to fault anyone who deals for a 38 PPG player who is only 29 years old. Kobe's a guy who can affect a game in pretty much all its phases at an elite level, so in my opinion, whoever comes out of the trade with a player of his caliber is the winner of the trade. At the time, ashes did not have too many pieces around KB, so I did question whether or not he would be able to surround Bryant with the necessary talent to become a contender. However, they are currently riding a nice hot streak and the pieces fit together nicely. Samb really brought it together, adding 2 more blocks a game to what was a shoddy center rotation. I do question how they will have success in the playoffs though. I'm not sold on their platoon arrangement at center, and Barea turns it over way too much for my liking.
8. At this point it looks like Marty and jah will easily make their cys. If you were them would you stand pat or try to make additional moves?
Depends what moves are available to them. If I were Jah, I would be hesitant to give up more picks in the future because Chris Webber is already 34 and that bitch Steve Francis has hit the magical age of 30. Kenyon Martin having a breakout year was also a pretty fortuitous development for Jah. Their position as a playoff team out East is precarious at best, so it would be best not to risk sending any more future picks in deals. He could try to package Bosh and Mo for an upgrade at either forward position though.
It seems to me that Marty has more leeway to make trades. Even though his team is worse than Jah's, Marty is in a much worse conference and his team has a lot more upside to it, so bigger risks can be taken with the potential for bigger rewards. Marty also has a few more first round picks to wheel and deal with, and the youth on his team like Redick and Gortat could be very enticing to some GM's. The Sonics have the potential to make a splash by landing an all-star.
9. Dbw has been dominating the league since the restart. Some gms seem to insinuate that his championships are somehow worth less because he got them at the beginning. Thoughts?
That's such a lame cop-out at the best of times. I could see more of a point to this argument if we started with current rosters and DBW started with the Heat, Thunder or LA and just started dominating with no work put in. We had a creation draft though, and other teams had the same opportunity to do what DBW did. Maybe not with the exact same players, but there was no reason for Shaq to fall so far down. Someone who had a top pick like DBW could've made that move to nab a middle round first round pick and pair Shaq with whichever superstar they had. But they didn't, so here we are. Quit whining about it and accept it. Whoever passed on Shaq has no right to whine about DBW using their mistake against them to dominate the league. Not to mention DBW has also made trades, and I think turned Artest into Nash? So that's another great move, are they going to blame the creation draft for that too?
10. Who are you looking forward to seeing out of this year's draft? Are you going to try to draft a bbs ready player?
There are a lot of players I'm interested in seeing, but I have to go with my favorite player OJ Mayo. It seems like Spenny hasn't made him fall off the top of the Bust Tree and hit every Bust Branch on the way down, so I'm hoping I might be able to nab him with the Wolves pick. This was a deep draft in real life, and with Spenny trying to keep ratings down and lying like crazy on his notes, it'll be interesting to see which players become casualties in the campaign to keep ratings low.
I don't think it really matters who I draft with either of my picks. I will probably move them regardless. I'd say I have a higher chance of keeping who I draft with the Wolves pick because there's a higher chance I will take a player who could help me in my contract year there, so there would be no point in trading him. With my own pick, which will probably be high (knock on wood), I will have to deal the player immediately to get help now because I can't afford to wait on the guy to become a stud.
11. You are currently projected #1 in the draft. Let's assume you win the lotto. How many players in the league would you give the pick for straight up?
Knock on woodx1000. Don't try to jinx me. But if I win the lotto, here is a list of players who I would trade the pick for straight up (keeping in mind my contract year situation):
Dirk Nowitzki
Kobe Bryant
Kevin Durant
LeBron James
Dwyane Wade
Jermaine O'Neal
Tim Duncan
Yao Ming
Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, and Michael Redd possibly. I think netting any one of these players would probably help me get through the CY pretty easily considering my other assets. I'm also wary of Spenny busting one of the top 3, so getting someone proven in their prime would be an easy way out because I'm chicken-shit. Obviously if I weren't in my contract year I could afford to be a little more picky, especially with the age of the players, but c'est la vie.
12.As usual, skillz has been trading right and left. Which has been his best trade? His worst?
Horrible question, on the first page of the trade forum alone he has six trades. I'm gonna scan through the first few pages, but they all seem to be minor deals. Meh. Off the top of my head, I remember I loved the deal where he got KG from Aar. Ok, just pulled up the trade and he got KG for a bunch of mediocre youth and some really bad 1sts. That has to be his best trade. If it's not, shoot me.
Nice, and just underneath the KG trade is the trade where he dealt Chris Paul. I hated that deal for him. I feel that if you have someone like Paul, and you're not in a life or death situation (aka CY), you have to hold onto them. It was so unnecessary, such a Skillz trade. Things tend to work out for him though, but in my opinion, this was his worst trade.
Another deal I liked for him was the Dwight trade. Dwight is almost exactly like the shitty ass Dwight that Spenny made a couple of versions ago. He came into the league at age 18, and spent so long waiting for him to develop, finally giving up on him when he was about 25. If BBS were a novel, Dwight would be the stock character because he never changes. Badass blocks and rebounds, really negative offensive player with the lack of free throws and bad field goal percentage. To get a beast like Artest for Dwight is a major coup.
13. Redraft the top 5 picks from last year
1. Kevin Durant -Duh
2. Al Horford - Damn near 20/10 already
3. Mike Conley - Edges Gasol because I think Conley has more potential
4. Marc Gasol - Solid as it gets
5. Rudy Fernandez- Slim pickings after the top 4 IMO
Almost all of the players after these have some fatal flaws or they just suck. Thad Young gets bumped completely out of the top 5 and maybe even the lotto because he looks like a huge bust at this point. Maybe he will bounce back, after all, I had hope in Joe Johnson. Oden still goes in the lotto because 2.5 blocks, but not a fan of the offensive game at all.
14. Looking back on the Durant trade- what was pig's thought process? Will this be remembered as the worst trade ever? Any hope that young will bounce back? Would you move the minny pick for him?
His thought process was to multiply his assets and get two very good players for a single great player. I've done this before, maybe never failed as wildly as what happened to Pig, but it can be done, and I can't fault him for gambling. I myself thought the deal was decent because Spenny made Young out to be a beast, but he turned out to be completely lying about pretty much everything he said about Young LOL.
As far as bad trades go, depending on which version we're talking about, there have definitely been way worse in the past. This trade is significantly worse than Camby for Nash which was the former benchmark for bad trades in this version, so yeah, this is probably the worst trade in this version. Nash was 29 or something when that trade occurred, while Durant is really young and Repole will likely have him for a good 10+ season if he so chooses.
I don't really have any hope for Young at this point. Dropping down to B scouted with no improvements whatsoever is really telling of his future. I wouldn't move any picks I have for him because he doesn't look like he can be a useful contributor at all in the next 5 seasons.
15. If you want to rebuild and dont have your picks which 3 gms would you least like to have your picks?
Repole by far. Simply because he would lord it over you until the end of time and never let you forget he has your picks. Just ask Kobe. Haven't really had any similar experiences with any other GM's because I don't just go giving a lot of my own picks away at a time. Biggie refused to give just one of my picks back, which turned out to be a great move for him by the way. As for the third name, I got nothing, but I'll just throw CC's name out there because I can and I have a feeling he would ask for the world for the picks back.
