Maniac's Countdown: Top Ten Most Valuable C's
Welcome, friends, to the first edition of Maniac's Countdown! We are going to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the ten most valuable C's in BBSFive. Now, remember, we are looking for the most VALUABLE C's, not necessarily the current best in the game. So, many different factors are in play here - current statistics and ratings are obviously important but we will also look at potential, past development, future projections, etc.
Please note - I'm going to rank players by the position at which they're currently listed at the time of this article (i.e. Dwight Howard would be considered a PF).
Also, please note - most C's in this league really suck.
So, enough chit-chat..time for the countdown!

Zydrunas Ilgauskas C 31 7'3'' 260 A- C D+ B- B C
Career Stats: 15.9 PPG/9.5 RPG/1.1 BPG/1.0 SPG/2.1 TOPG
Career Accolades: None
- Big Z holds down a spot on this list despite being 31 years of age. I am pretty sure he has effectively played every position outside of PG. He is playing well above his averages this year for a very talented, thriving Raptors team. Plus, what competition does he really have for a spot on this list? Varejao? He blows. Diop? Meh. Someone has to make it on here! Plus, he's an excellent FT shooting big! Good work, Z. He carries a fair amount of value simply for not sucking.

#9
Ben Wallace C 32 6'9'' 240 C D D A A- D
Career Stats: 7.3 PPG/12.3 RPG/2.4 BPG/1.2 SPG
Career Accolades: All League Third Team, 1x Defensive Player of the Year, All Defensive Team, 1x All Star
- Wallace is still one of the better defensive bigs in the league. Unfortunately, he currently has a broken skull. Big Ben recently was moved from the world champion Detroit Pistons and hopes to be in the hunt for another ring with the revamped Denver Nuggets. Wallace will never be a scoring threat but he is a great positional and stats defender. However, Wallace is also 32 years old and likely entering the twilight of his career. Plus, broken skulls hurt. He is the type of player that any team would still love to have but his trade value is much less than his current ability.

#8
Paul Millsap C 21 6'8'' 245 B- C D B+ B- A
Career Stats: 17.2 PPG/8.4 RPG/1.5 BPG/1.2 SPG/0.9 TOPG
Career Accolades: None (Rookie)
- Millsap is the only rookie to crack this list. He had an average first TC but his play early on in this season is very encouraging. He is scoring for the slightly overachieving Bulls and his incredibly low TO's are very nice. He is contributing nicely as a stats defender as well. He will always be a little undersized (and his drop in rebounding after his first TC is a little disconcerting) but he still finds a way to make it work. We could be looking at a younger Carlos Boozer type of player - efficient scorer, solid rebounder, low TO's.

#7
Eddy Curry C 23 6'11'' 285 A- C- D C+ C B
Career Stats: 16.4 PPG/6.8 RPG/0.9 BPG/1.8 TOPG
Career Accolades: None
- The ever-so-large Curry has improved each year as a scorer and all-around player. His scoring numbers are down a bit from last season but that can be attributed to an influx of scoring talent surrounding him. I think it is realistic, at this point, to give Curry a chance to develop into an A scorer. He will be a very, very valuable player if he ever reaches that plateau (especially if he can get his defense up to a B in the future). I think he could eventually be an annual 20+ PPG scorer on an inside focused team. He scores efficiently and is careful with the ball. Good FT shooter for a big. And, like a few others on this list, his biggest asset is his age. Curry still has a lot of room to grow and develop.

#6
Andrew Bynum C 19 7'0'' 285 B D+ C- A- C+ B
Career Stats: 16.1 PPG/7.4 RPG/1.6 BPG/1.0 SPG/2.2 TOPG
Career Accolades: None
- Bynum probably did not progress early on as well as many had expected. He entered the league as a very highly touted prospect but it is fair to say that he hasn't met the grade. He is an efficient enough scorer but is an equally poor FT shooter. Also, Bynum is turning the ball over at an alarming rate early on in this young season. However, he is showing some positive signs. His shot blocking abilities appear to be on the rise. His shooting %'s have increased slightly. And he's only 19 years old. He will eventually develop into a very solid starting C but I don't see him ever being a dominant (or even all star caliber) player.

#5
Marcin Gortat C 22 6'11'' 240 B C- C- B B- C
Career Stats: 15.7 PPG/8.7 RPG/1.9 BPG/1.9 TOPG
Career Accolades: All Star Rookie Game, All Rookie Team
- Sleeper pick, baby! Gortat was billed before the draft as a rugged player who will likely fill a starting role for years to come. I think he's heading on exactly that path. Gortat is off to a wonderful start this season for the rebuilding Sonics. His scoring, rebounding, steals, and shot blocking are all up from the previous season (and his shot blocking has reached the phenomenal 3+ level). He's scoring at an efficient 48% on a struggling team and is not turning the ball over much at all. I am a believer in Gortat and I think he will develop into one of the most solid starting C's in the league. Plus, once again, the competition sucks. Gortat is also only 22 years old.

#4
Carlos Boozer C 25 6'9'' 280 B C- C- A- B C
Career Stats: 16.1 PPG/9.4 RPG/0.8 BPG/1.0 SPG/1.1 TOPG
Career Accolades: All Star Rookie Game Participant, Rookie Game MVP, 1x All Star
- Boozer is like a slightly less talented version than the man a spot higher on this list. He brings very little as a stats defender but most be solid positionally. However, Boozer makes his money as a scorer and effective rebounder. Also, Boozer is off to the best start of his career. He also does not turn the ball over much, a refreshing change from many others on this list. He is far from a superstar but, being only 25 years old, it is fair to say that he's flying under-the-radar. Again, Boozer being this high on the list is as much of a reflection of the state of C's in BBSFive but he does a lot of things really well.

#3
Elton Brand C 27 6'8'' 265 A- C- C B+ B+ C
Career Stats: 20.4 PPG/11.4 RPG/1.7 BPG/1.3 SPG/2.0 TOPG
Career Accolades: 1x All Star, 1x All League Third Team
- Brand decided to take a stab at the C position this year and it has paid off nicely. He is right in the middle of his prime and scores at a very efficient rate. He simply is one of the better scoring bigs in the league. He also is one of the better rebounding bigs in the league. Good stuff from Brand. He really stands out more at C than PF because, well, most C's in this league suck. The Cavaliers have an explosive offense and are one of the better rebounding teams in the league, two traits in which Brand directly contributes in a great way. I think he is actually a bit underrated in this league and should carry a great price tag.

Shaquille O'Neal C 34 7'1'' 335 A D C A A- C
Career Stats: 25.1 PPG/11.9 RPG/2.1 BPG/1.1 SPG/2.5 TOPG
Career Accolades: 3x All League First Team, 3x All Star, All Defensive Team
- Shaq Diesel being so high on this list is reflective of two things. First, he is still incredibly good and showing no signs of slowing down. He has been the most dominant C in the league to this point, by far, and that has yet to change. How can a big this talented be any further down the list with such little competition at his position? I know he's 34. I know that 34 year old players typically don't garner a huge return. However, Diesel simply would not go for cheap in any deal.

Yao Ming C 26 7'5'' 296 B+ C C A- B B
Career Stats: 24.0 PPG/11.3 RPG/2.4 BPG/3.0 TOPG
Career Accolades: 3x All League Second Team, 3x All Star, 2x All Defensive Team
- The tremendously large Yao tops the list of most valuable C's in BBSFive. Yao led the Rockets to a tremendously successful season a year ago and has them playing well once again, leading arguably the most intimidating and formidable frontcourt in the league. Yao is just entering the prime of his career and already has a tremendous all-around game - he's a dominantly efficient scorer, a tremendous FT shooter for a big, and a great shot blocker. Turnovers are always a bit of an issue for the big man but he does enough well to make up for it. I certainly don't think that the Rockets would trade Yao for any other C on this list and I cannot say I blame them. He is the most valuable C in BBSFive.

Well, that wraps up Maniac's Countdown: Top Ten Most Valuable C's. That was a bit painful. It really was. Now, of course, this list is a bit skewed because of some guys who have switched position (Dwight Howard, Darko, Tyson Chandler immediately come to mind). However, I tried my hardest to make chicken salad out of chicken shit! A few stars here, a few solid players, and a few potentially good starting C's in the future.
Stay tuned for the much more talented Maniac'd Countdown: Top Ten Most Valuable PF's. Thanks!
