We have seen many articles in the past breaking down the most valuable players in the league. This article will do that, but will also make a list of the top-5 best players by position regardless of contracts and trade value.
Best Point Guards - Based entirely on statistics
1) Kyle Lowry PG 30 6'0'' 175 B A- A- A- C C
Back-to-back MVP awards. It's hard to deny Lowry of the point guard throne in terms of being the best at his position.
He really has no holes to his game. He doesn't turn it over much (I believe his topg this early is an anomaly that will be corrected), he scores at will, he grabs rebounds, he shoots good percentages and he wins games.
Lowry came in with very raw ratings and has exploded every year, although he is starting to finally decline.
His contract just about demolished his value unfortunately. It's a tough pill to swallow, but certainly movable at the present time to a potential contender.
2) Cenk Akyol PG 29 6'6'' 200 B+ A- B- A C C
Cenk is coming off of a career year and is entering his prime.
Like Lowry, he does everything well and is an even better ball handler.
His contract is fantastic and he re-signed it willingly due to his exceptionally low greed rating.
A huge asset to the Pistons that will always make them a dangerous team to face in the playoffs.
3) Derrick Rose PG 27 6'3'' 190 A- A- C+ B+ C C
Rose is definitely the most talented scorer of the bunch. He averages around 30 ppg every season and while his turnovers hover around 3 topg, the trade off for his scoring is worthwhile.
His percentages are sky high and the Nuggets are always above .500 with him at the helm.
The Nuggets have some good pieces around him, but unfortunately none are real stars and that could hinder his chances at a title.
Rose is playing SG this season, which is an interesting experiment that has paid off so far.
4) Deron Williams PG 32 6'3'' 210 B+ B A A- C- F
After leading the Raptors to a championship, Williams signed a huge four year extension and remains one of the top point guards in the league.
Of all the aforementioned point guards, Williams shoots the highest percentages consistently.
As Deron gets older, the Raptors chances of winning another championship will lessen, but DJ made the smart move to acquire him in his prime and Williams took them to the promised land.
5) Rajon Rondo PG 30 6'1'' 171 B+ C+ B+ A- C D
This was a toss-up between Rondo, Marcus Smart, Chris Paul and John Wall and Rondo got the nod for his high shooting percentage and career rebounding average of 6.6 rpg.
Rondo is also a winner who led the Grizzlies to a championship.
His contract isn't as bad as some of those listed above, so he still has pretty solid value as well.
Kudos to Kobe for getting the most out of Rondo.
Best Point Guards - Based on trade value
1) Marcus Smart PG 22 6'4'' 200 A- C+ A B+ C A
The most valuable point guard in the league by a large margin.
Smart is one TC away from being absolutely phenomenal and could end up with A- B A+ A C C ratings, which would be ungodly.
Ashes must be sweating bullets about the prospect of Smart bolting in FA.
I'd guess that Smart is top-3 value in the entire league. He's a tremendous asset.
2) Cenk Akyol PG 29 6'6'' 200 B+ A- B- A C C
Akyol is still a top-10 value player, at least until he hits the age of 30.
Akyol would immediately put most teams into title contention and if the Nuggets play their cards right, they could be a serious contender as well.
That being said, they may want to trade Akyol while his value is this high and get some nice youth for him.
3) Andrew Harrison PG 22 6'5'' 215 B+ C+ A- B C+ B
Harrison kind of sucks at this point, but everyone knows that he will eventually transform into a beast.
That being said, if Harrison isn't able to get his TOs down to below 3 topg, he'll always be labelled the Bowie to Dakari's Jordan.
Right now, Harrison is a huge asset, especially with his sky high rebounding, which puts him only behind Royce White and Pape Sy in terms of rebounding ability for a starting PG.
Early on, Harrison's averages are looking solid, so I imagine that he has a bright future ahead of him.
4) Derrick Rose PG 27 6'3'' 190 A- A- C+ B+ C C
Rose is still only 27 years old, which makes him a huge asset to have, especially on his solid contract.
He will easily average 30 ppg again this year and can be plugged into any type of offense.
The big question mark is whether a team would pony up what the Nuggets would require to consider moving him, because I imagine that he's worth more than he's been offered in the past.
5) John Wall PG 25 6'4'' 196 B B+ A- A C C
This was a tough call because Wall has been so hit or miss during his career.
I've never seen a player who's value has fluctuated so much over the years.
At 25, Wall still has a ton of good years ahead of him and is likely to continue growing.
He also has four years left on his contract, which means he's locked up long-term.
Right now, Wall is on the team with the best record, so despite his poor percentages and okay averages, he's doing something correctly.
