I'm only ranking 27 gms because I'm not ranking myself (obviously at the top and I'm not ranking norgeis. Looking back, I might have been a little too hard on the newer gms but that seems to be a bbs tradition and a function of the quality of the existing gms. Look at it this way – you have nowhere to go but up.
27. Elbee
Why: Because he is the worst gm here. 2012 - 12-70,2013 - 13-69,2014 - 31-51. That is what he has done since getting here. He had to trade away his next 4 picks in order to get enough talent to get through his cy this year. He also had to take on 3 expensive contracts in order to do so. Hopefully he has some plan move 1 or 2 of those deals at the deadline, preferably for his picks, if possible. Note to Elbee – Anthony Bennett is not that good.
26. Biggie
Why: He is one of my favorite gms in the league. Always answers pms and is active. But he doesn't seem to get it. His current team is a great example. He is in his 2nd cy year. He holds onto decent guys like Batum and derrick williams – wo birds – instead of just moving them for worse expirings. Why draft Andre Francis instead of a boom/bust guy? You can afford the bust in your first year. Tbh I would keep jv and move everybody for picks/expirings and build through the draft and fa.
25. alldayGB
Why: Built a decent team around Butler but just through it in after jv left even though he still had Deron and AV. I don't mind the idea of rebuilding – everybody does it at some point – but I think that he could have won the east with some minor moves. In any case if you are going to tank, go all in. Why keep butler? Yeah, I'm sure that he got some horrible offers but you have to keep in mind that Butler will cost him 5 spots in the lotto. The talent difference is usually significant. He pretty much gave away AV for nothing wo even trying to get talent. He is still a top defender/rebounder and could have brought in a few picks.
24. Musta
Why: I really like what he has done bringing in talent, though some of those contracts are suspect. Klay and Morris aren't really max players though I would rather have them at max contracts than not at all and he got them on 4 yr maxes. Adding Lawson's contract was kinda overkill though. On the other hand I love nate, collision and Mac. I think that if he had a better dc he could win the east. Also could move nate for a top sf or a pg upgrade.
23. GP
Why: Currently playing very well, this team is a cap problem waiting to explode. Cap problems in the first year competing is pretty bad. I will lol if he loses Tucker because of cap problems. Very questionable moves taking on llull and tyler's contracts. Now he will have guys he doesn't need eating up 10 mil of contracts when he has to resign tucker and robinson. Also has too many firsts cluttering up his roster.
22. Trevc
Why: He hasn't done anything until this year, topping out at 34 wins. He has finally put together a nice looking, albeit aging, team. Doesn't have enough depth or rebounding to do much in the playoffs but should have enough to be a lower seed playoff team for the next few years. The only way that I see this team ever becoming a contender is if Jabari Gates or Kyrie have abnormally good tcs.
21. Mike
Why: Not sure why he signed a pg in his second cy yr. he could have kept tanking hard. Jennings isn't even that good. He should be moved immediately for expirings, if possible. He is this high bc he had the foresight to see how good Leonard could be. Porter looks decent but sadly not better than that. Definitely should be a starter at some point but possibly only a 4th/5th starter type. He has a lot of those types – porter, nash, pierce, lasme, lamb, plumlee are all guys who are solid rotation players that could start on the right team. Mike has to show that he can consolidate talent and choose a direction for his team. While I could see this team becoming very good with some smart trades, a nice pick and maybe an fa steal, I could also see this team getting cyd quickly if leonard leaves. Very important offseason for the Wolves.
20. Game
Why: He has definitely been less active lately and that has hurt his performance. He only has 1 50 win season in his 7 years running the jazz. Game has turned into one of the many gms here who lives in fear of the cy. Also never seems to do a good job with his dcs. Not a big risk taker. Taking Jesus Terry is a perfect example. Guy has decent backup written all over him but there are tons of guys out there that look the same. Take a risk on Snow or Hudson. Maybe it won't work out but if it does then you are much better. The one advantage that Game has is that his picks always have value so if he wants to get better he can always package a few "game firsts" for an aging stud.
19. Monkeyballz
Why: Great job drafting. Big mistake not extending Simon but hindsight is 20-20. Still has 2 star quality bigs in Austin and davis. Also a solid young sf in Malone. He will have a ton of cap in the offseason and if he can get a top pg watch out. This could be a team to watch out for in the coming years. He does have to prove that he can flip pieces for those that fit better together. Davis and Austin don't fit well together and I don't see how they are going to take the next step without a big that can block. If monkeyballz can prove that he can take the next step and turn talent into pieces that play well together he will jump up this list next time.
18 Ashes
Why: He is doing a great job tanking. He has already drafted smart, wiggins and parker and has the 2nd worst record in the league. On the other hand none of the three has shined and they all look to be possible busts. Smart is solid – low tos and high steals – but that isn't what you are looking for from a top pick. Still Ashes should have no trouble flipping them for good enough players next year. He was ok at the beginning of the league, stringing together 5 straight playoff berths, but never cracked the 50 win barrier.
17. Andy
Why: Meh, 4 straight 50 win seasons including 2 60 win seasons were nice but no ship left a bitter taste. Got Yao/kobe/wade together but mostly managed to prove that it is hard to win without depth or a pg. I really like the talent dump/pick collection that he has done so far. I'm surprised that Davis isn't gone for expirings yet. Extending Pearce was low risk/high reward so nice move. Anatoly is a nice player to have and shouldn't bother andy's tank so it was a good move to hold onto him. Young and Freeland should go for worse expirings but it definitely isn't for a lack of trying. I'm interested to see how he will do with all the picks he has gathered.
16. Jeff
Why: He has been pretty average, winning 43,44,45 the last three seasons. He has some nice pieces with rose, oladipo love and hibbert but he doesn't have a ton of depth and really has to chose a direction. I could see him on the outside of the playoffs looking in for the next few years. If he isn't careful a few tanking teams could change direction and overtake him next year. He looks like he is going to jah rose, just sleep on him and hope that he keeps him in the playoffs every year. Really just seems a few depth pieces away from being a much better team. Hard to see why he can't get together with tanking teams and get solid backups for expirings. If he would have signed big expirings he could have gotten starter types for free. Maybe go after batum and Glen davis?
15. Greg
Why: Greg has been a solid gm. Before last year he had strung together 4 straight playoff appearances, including 2 50 win seasons. He has done a nice job tanking this year although I think that he will regret keeping Barnes, just because he will have to use cap resigning him in the offseason. While Barnes is a nice scorer there are always like that who can be had in fa. Greg really needs to make the right pick this year. Henri and adams look ok but they might be the type that look much better on a bad team. He has a bunch of nice depth pieces – abbott, walker, liam, Malone, lavar – but he has to put star types around them.
27. Elbee
