12 Questions with Boston Celtics GM DBW!
1. What was your opinion of last year? Biggest surprises? How did you like Skillz team last year?
I thought last year was probably the most boring BBSFive year yet to be honest and it wasn't because my team was average either. Just didn't get that feeling that shit was exciting in spite of all of the trades. Speaking of trades, the biggest surprise was you building up and tearing down a championship contender in the matter of a few sims. Mind boggling IMO. Biggie doing work so soon is a little surprising as well. Also didn't think any team had a shot against the Knicks so the 0-4 series vs the Hawks was extremely surprising.
As far as the champs, I liked their team. Duncan being on it was the only factor there. That being said I think the Knicks, Rockets and Hawks were all better teams.
...I fucked up last year for sure. I was convinced my lack of a PG was gonna be a downfall for me. I shouldve just stuck with LMA/TD/Marion and rode it out. Worst thing is I didnt pull the trigger for a Royal Ivey trade before Skillz got him. Meh.
2. What could you have done differently last year to compete more? Do you regret not trading Shard and tanking again?
Umm I don't know... make a trade? Problem with that is it takes two to trade and unfortunately there wasn't very much out there for me. Sucks since I'm very willing to trade two young studs in Greg Smith and Kidd-Gilchrist but what can I do? I can't force GMs to trade. Shard was on the block and shopped all season long but I simply couldn't find any takers. I was willing to move him cheaply (2 meh picks and exp is generally what I asked of guys) and I couldn't get any bites. Don't get it, but again, can't force people to trade. In the end I wasn't going to tank with Lee on board anyway and quite frankly.. this draft was garbo.
...This draft was pretty mediocre. I think it probably was best to just rest your CY and then kinda take a look at things again. I'm not convinced you have enough talent to be elite. Your younger players are solid but they arent gonna get the type of guys you want IMO. Id be surprised if you didn't need to either trade them for VETs or tank again soon.
3. What did you think of this draft? Any surprises? Who do you like the most from this draft?
Didn't pay much attention to this draft to be honest. I took one hard look at the ratings with the KG face. And I only read about half of the draft notes. You know you have a draft that's probably going to be shit when the notes of the #1 guy sound suspect. Couple that with the fact that I had no picks in this draft and I had no real reason to be interested or do any research.
...I'm excited to see Shabazz and McLemore. I think they could both be very good players. I am a little worried about Shabazz busting though.
4. Looking towards FA, what are your team needs? Who are the best FAs out there? If you had MAX room who would you go after?
Let's be honest - I need EVERYTHING. Well, I guess I don't need a PF, but you know what I mean. This team needs a lot of work if I'm going to compete with the Pistons/Knicks/Hawks in a tough Eastern Conference. That being said this FA class is horrid. It's Griffin, Harden and then a bunch of role players and nobodies. Of course I would MAX Griffin and Harden if I had the cash but unfortunately I don't... huge L there. For now I'll have to settle for bringing my guys back as large expirings, as well as maybe signing a solid MLE big or wing. Don't want to name drop the guys I really want heh.
...I think like most teams you need to consider adding some over priced VETs to couple with David Lee and your youngsters. You need a PG pretty bad too and they are hard to come by. Im stoked to have Wall and Calderon. Im still holding out hope for Brandon Jennings and Steph Curry too.
5. Going into this year what are your plans? What do you need to add? Who are you moving? Who are your keepers?
I'm looking to win obviously. No turning back now with Lee on board. I basically need to add everything other than a PF right now. MKG, Greg Smith and Greg Monroe all need to go in deals to get me a C and a PG. Not too worried about the wing positions to be honest. I'm going hard with the PMs right now but things still aren't looking good for me so we'll see. Maybe after another TC I'll finally get some bites.
...PGs are so tough to get right now.Id probably just keep MKG at SF. Hes pretty sick. Shard should be at SG with that rebounding probably. If you could move Monroe and picks for a stud type PG youd be set. Not sure you can get that though.
6. Why cant you get the kind of value you want for Monroe/Smith and MKG?
Monroe is obvious. People like to act like they feel letter ratings aren't as meaningful as the true ratings but when it comes down to crunch time these same people won't be trading for anyone that doesn't look the part. And don't get me wrong I am the same way... but I've always claimed to be a letter ratings guy anyway. I understand that Monroe won't have crazy value with his letter ratings and as a result I've been offering Monroe up in deals for players that are good but aren't necessarily studs or all-stars and I'm STILL having trouble. Crazy. Smith and MKG definitely have the value. I just can't seem to get a deal done unless it's a rape... and not in my favor. Everyone else isn't really trading.
...Monroe is solid but the lack of blocks is a killer. Smith and MKG are nice but they arent the types I want ideally when making trades. IDK, I just dont think they hold the value you think they do. Time will tell.
7. What team looks like the favorite in the West and East right now? Why?
I still like the Knicks in the East. I have no clue how the Hawks were able to 4-0 them. Utterly ridiculous. LeBron/Wade/Yao is such a strong trio. I think they have the best team in the league. In the West I'll have to go with the Rockets. It doesn't seem Biggie is looking to sell on his guys and I thought he had the best team out there anyway. The Suns selling Duncan and Marion just makes this a more obvious pick.
...In the West even you said the Kings look good too. Kings and Rockets are tough. I expect to be in the mix as well. The Knicks look nasty. Hawks have a ton of talent as well. Some nice teams out there.
8. Which of the newer GMs has impressed and disappointed you most? Why?
For disappointing I would have to say no one. They've all been pretty damn active.. even LB who is no longer with us ( ) was posting regularly. I'm fond of all of them. Most impressing is hard to say as they are all still so new and have yet to come up out of their rebuild stages. I'll be watching closely.
...Did LB get fired? Did he quit? Is he still here? Weird stuff.Clipps GM is hit and miss IMO. Really excited to see what Monkeyballz and El Cheato do.
9. If you could switch franchises with anyone right now who would it be? Why?
First of all I wouldn't want to switch. I have the Celtics. I'm at home. But to not be an asshole and answer the question, I guess I would switch with the 76ers. Not so much because of what they have on the squad... but mainly because of how horrid they've been. 1 playoff appearance and a win percentage of 37. Never seem to get a GM to stick around for more than a few seasons either. Disgusting. I'd like the challenge though.
...I really love what Aar has done. He has some nice young talent. Plays team is probably the one team that most fits my style. Nanz has a ton of upside in his team. Any of these teams would be fun.
10. If you could change 1 thing about the current BBS what would it be?
Meh I hate these questions. Does anyone ever actually say that they want to change something? Oh shit hold up I actually have something I want to change and I'll probably get killed by Marty... but these boards? yea I'm not getting used to this shit. Thought I would but it's been a while now and I'm still like WTF at everything. PMs are fucking annoying. Somehow I'll receive a PM but not get a notification and because of that I won't know that I got a PM until I actually click on messages. That shit fucked up my potential deal for Oden with Erbes though in the end I didn't really want to do it anymore. Shit is just hard to look at for me. I can't explain it. I just like the old boards.
...I got used to the boards surprisingly. I guess I kinda liked morning sims better. But ya, things are going well. I like that Marty can do stuff at work now. Should make his simming easier.
11. With fake players probably right around the corner what are your thoughts? DO you prefer or dislike fakes?
I always liked fake over retro. But with that said I don't really mind. My only gripe with retro is when it's done in leagues that already started retro. The thought of two Shaqs, two KGs, etc. just irks the fuck out of me. While it's true I can't relate to the fake players, I think it gives commishes the opportunity to get creative and make fun players. You can't bust MJ or Magic Johnson without having the league kill you... the uncertainty factor with the fake players makes things more fun.
...I cannot wait for fake players. Already started my first draft class. YEE!
12. Recently there have been a ton of new GMs that were in leagues with you in the past. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Why?
I don't see how it could possibly be a bad thing. It's nice to see a bunch of quality GMs come out of retirement and try their hand again. Kobe, Cool and Cheato have all been very active so I'm pleased. Traves has been here a while and has a good team. Excellent additions.
..I like it too thus far. Hopefully they all stick it out. I was more concerned with some kind of mass exodus, but it seems like theyre happy here so far. We should add a couple more.
