The 2005 BBSFive season is well under way and we are starting to get a clear picture on just what we will be seeing with the draft this offseason. Early reports indicated that the 2005 draft is pretty stacked - it features a few potential superstars at the top and seems to be a very deep draft as well. This is a big draft for so many teams around the league - team identities are starting to be established and the contract year has to become a thought in the back of the mind of a few. So, this could be a make or break draft for a few teams and a very deep draft makes that all the more interesting.
Today, we are going to take a look at the top prospects in the draft and try to sort through the piles of solid talent that have declared for the draft. A deep draft is always a difficult draft for those after the first few picks - some players are inevitably not going to live up to pre-draft expectations. So, lets take a deeper look at the 2005 BBSFive Draft.
---
CP3 is the consensus #1 pick in a very, very deep draft.
1. Chris Paul PG 6'0'' 175 20 B C B B- D+ A
- Chris Paul is about as sure-fire of a first round pick as Dwight Howard was last season. CP3 is said to be the best PG prospect the league will see in quite some time and he should develop into the best PG in the league. What more could you ask for in a PG? Elite scorer? Check. Top-notch handles? Check. Solid defensively? Check. Elite speed and quickness? Check. He is a franchise player in a league lacking top-end PG's. CP3 will be an instant success in BBSFive and will make some franchise very happy.
2. Deron Williams PG 6'3'' 210 21 C+ C+ B- C+ C A
- It will be so interesting to see the battle between Deron Williams and CP3 as they develop. Deron has the look of a franchise player as well and should be a top-3 PG in this league. Again, BBSFive is a little thin on stud PG's so it should not surprise many that Deron Williams is the second most valuable player in this draft. He is bigger and stronger than CP3 but just does not have quite the same court vision and pure PG abilities. Still, he should develop into an elite scorer from the PG position and well and, like CP3, he will make a team very happy. I think these two are pretty much a lock to go in the first two spots.
3. Andrew Bynum C 7'0'' 285 18 C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ A
- Big and raw, incredibly talented. That seems to be the book on the rather large and talented youngster. Bynum seems to be the only guy on the board capable of jumping Deron Williams as the second overall pick. Bynum has all the potential in the world to be an all league player but it will be a few years before he is a serious contributor. Andrew Bynum is the perfect player for a team looking to tank still - he has franchise player potential while being raw enough for a team to garner another top pick. I think we are looking at a guy in Bynum who could eventually develop into a 25 PPG/12 RPG player. Pretty exciting to have a guy like this only be the third most valuable player in the draft.
4. Andrew Bogut C 7'0'' 245 20 C+ D+ C- B- B- A
- And now the draft becomes a disaster to figure out! The fun really begins after the top three. Honestly, any number of guys could go in this spot (and the exact same could be said for pretty much the next fifteen slots on the board) but Bogut gets the nod here. He does not have quite the upside of an Andrew Bynum but he should be a more than capable starter in BBS. Good starting C's are a valued commodity in this league. Bogut should develop into a solid all-around scorer, an above-average rebounder, and he will never be a liability defensively. I think Andrew Bogut will have a spot in this league for quite some time.
Ellis lands so high on Maniac's board because of his potential to be an elite scorer.
5. Monta Ellis SG 6'3'' 175 19 B C C C C- A
- Some may think this is a bit high for Monta Ellis but it is the opinion of this draft guru that he will develop into an elite scorer. He does one thing really, really well and that one thing is very valuable - he can score with the best of them. His all-around game is rather raw but he is not terrible at any one aspect of the game. He very well could end up being a top ten scorer in the league and I find that worthy of being this high on the board. His size is not elite for the SG position but he finds ways to score regardless. He should develop into at least a solid defender.
6. Danny Granger SF 6'8'' 225 22 C+ C+ C- B- C A
- Granger is the oldest player to appear on the board so far but he, like Ellis, should develop into a very solid scorer. He has all the qualities of a great wing player. His all-around scoring game is a plus, his handles are solid enough, and he should develop into a good defender. Granger might be the type of player that can enter the league and immediately make an impact. His ceiling probably is not quite as high as some others left on the board but I think Granger will be a pretty safe pick. He should be a solid starter for years to come.
7. David Lee PF 6'9'' 249 22 B- C C C B A
- Lee is weak defensively but he should make up for that by being a plus rebounder and a very solid scoring big. He's a little on the shorter side but can be considered a crafty scorer. Very solid all-around scoring abilities. His handles are more than solid for a big man. Lee could develop into a 20+ PPG scorer and that certainly makes him worthy of a top ten selection. He will be a very solid starter if he makes some strides defensively. Could develop into one of the better rebounders in the league.
8. Ersan Ilyasova PF 6'9'' 235 18 C+ C+ C- C+ C+ A
- Ersan is extremely raw but he simply cannot be placed any lower on the board than this. He just has too much ability and potential. His all-around game could develop into something special. We could be looking at another Dirk Nowitzki. However, he has to live up to his potential. Great scoring potential. Solid three point shot for a big. Someone his size with his talents is very exciting. The 'p' word is always dangerous though as we have all seen players like Ersan not live up to expectations.
9. Louis Williams SG 6'2'' 175 18 C+ B- C C D A
- Williams could develop into one of the more exciting players in this draft class. His potential as a scoring guard is through the roof. He is far from the strongest player in the draft but is probably every bit as quick as CP3. He uses that quickness to score inside and out, making him a legit prospect. His lack of size is a bit of an issue and he may get picked on a little defensively. Poor rebounder. Williams should be a fun one to watch and we think he is one of the more intriguing players in the draft.
Gortat is being billed as one of the more rugged players in the draft.
10. Marcin Gortat C 6'11'' 240 21 B- D+ D C+ B- B
- Gortat is another solid C that should eventually develop into a starter. He lacks any real star potential but he is the type of gritty player that teams love to have. His inside scoring game is solid and he is described as a rugged rebounder. His strength will buy him a lot of baskets and rebounds in this league. And, even though he is poor defensively, he is a valuable enough player to justify this spot. I do not see a potential starting C having any less value than this. Could go a little higher if a team needs a solid big.
11. Marvin Williams SF 6'9'' 230 19 B- C+ D+ B- C A
- Marvin is a difficult prospect to figure out. He has all of the abilities but sometimes just doesn't seem to be able to put it all together. A player with his abilities should be a little higher on this board but he is being billed as a late-lotto player. Still, he has a solid all-around scoring game and is an above-average defender/rebounder. His handles are solid but his court vision is lacking a bit. He is a bit of a liability when isolated defensively but will be a stats defender because of his athleticism.
12. Yaroslav Korolev SF 6'9'' 203 18 C+ C C A C B
- Korolev is the definition of a glue player and someone that almost every contending team would love to have. His abilities as a defender are above and beyond those of many already in the league. He seems to be the SF equivalent of Andre Emmett from the past draft and that, of course, means he is awesome. His scoring abilities are perfectly average. He is a solid rebounder. He is very solid with the basketball and does not make a lot of mistakes. Could go a bit higher than this. Could fall a bit lower than this. Does not have star potential but he is very intriguing.
13. Martell Webster SG 6'7'' 210 18 C+ A- C- C C- A
- Very intriguing prospect. Has very nice size for a SG and is well above average offensively from just about all areas of the court. He is a solid man-to-man defender. However, Webster is this high on the board because of his potential as a scorer. He could very well develop into an B+ A scorer. He is very young and very raw.
14. Amir Johnson PF 6'9'' 210 18 C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ A
- Johnson fits right in with the rest of this draft. He is very raw. He is very athletic. Definitely some common themes going at this point. Potential is the key word with this kid as well. The ability is there but he will just have to find a way to translate it to the league. Very lanky. He does nothing particularly great but has his share of solid enough traits. Needs a lot of work as a scorer but his athleticism helps him here. Basically, Johnson just needs to learn to translate his exceptional athletic ability into being a plus basketball player. Big time project player.
Blatche is a solid talent but needs to keep his act together to succeed in BBSFive.
15. Andray Blatche PF 6'11'' 235 19 C+ C D B- C+ A
- Blatche is a more talented player than Johnson. He has a more solid frame. His game is a bit more developed. He, like Johnson, is a really nice athlete. His defensive ability is probably a bit better than Johnson. His rebounding is decent enough. However, Blatche has the label of being a bit of a selfish and silly player. He makes a lot of little mistakes on the court that leaves scouts just baffled. Andray Blatche will determine just how good he will be in this league - he has the ability to be a special talent if he can cut out the silly plays. Needs to learn how to be a team player.
16. Raymond Felton PG 6'1'' 198 21 C B- C+ C+ C B
- Felton does not have the upside of some players still not listed on the board but he has a chance to be a solid starting PG. He is a very solid md-range shooter and comfortable with the offense running through him. His workmanlike abilities as a PG are comforting for some teams - could become a very reliable player. Has average size, nice strength, and solid rebounding ability for a PG. Felton is obviously greatly overshadowed by two elite PG's in this class but he is a solid third option.
17. Rashad McCants SG 6'4'' 207 21 B B C D+ D+ B
- McCants will only be a good pick for certain teams. He has the potential to develop into an elite scorer but certain aspects of his game are absolutely awful. His handles are well below average. Not only is he poor defensively but he honestly just does not show a ton of interest. He will get embarrassed if he is isolated defensively. However, McCants could make up for it all with his excellent scoring abilities. He has very solid quickness. He's about as tough to guard as they come in this draft. He just will make sure that he doesn't guard anyone else either. McCants will be a big fan of 137-134 games.
18. Gerald Green SF 6'8'' 200 19 B C+ D+ C C A
- And we come back to some familiar themes. Great athlete. Maybe the best raw athlete in the draft. He is undoubtedly one of the top leapers in the draft and possibly in the entire league. Lanky frame. Scouts would love to see a player with his athletic ability have more of an inside-out game but it just doesn't happen - he prides himself on the long ball. Pretty strong. He will be very fun to watch if he can harness some of that athletic ability. His handles are below the grade. Probably will win a dunk contest or two in his time in the league.
19. Martynas Andriuskevicius C 7'2'' 240 19 C D+ C B- C+ A
- Big time project player with some huge (literally) upside. Has a lot of potential to be a force defensively. And, of course, the most intriguing thing about Andriuskevicius is his size. He is huge! I think he will catch the eye of some GM simply because 7'2" C's are a rare commodity. He will never offer much offensively but could become a shutdown type of guy. Solid rebounding abilities. Another very raw player. Could definitely go higher than what the board thinks if a GM is intrigued by his size. Will be a pain to enter into DC's.
This image is potentially harmful to children.
20. Charlie Villanueva PF 6'11'' 240 21 B C D+ C C A
- Villanueva sneaks into the last spot on the inaugural board because of his potential and versatility. Could be a guy that mans either the SF or PF spot successfully (but he will need to work on that handling grade). He has solid all-around scoring abilities. Handles are average at best. He is not a great rebounder for a guy his size. Villanueva will be an above average stats defender. Just another raw, talented player. Fits in pretty well with the rest of this draft.
---
Very intriguing draft. Probably as many raw, athletic players that we will ever see in a draft. It will be very interesting to see how things unfold come draft time because it's a mess to sift through the prospects after the top three. Should be fun!
