No draft picks usually means that I won't write a mock but I do have the 2nd pick in rd 2 so I started looking at the draft in hopes of finding a steal. Who is the steal? Nobody obvious like lei fang. Even if I knew I wouldn't tell. Top of the draft is kinda confusing and could go a bunch of different ways.
1. Houston Rockets - Andy Coon SF 6'9" 210 19 B B+ C+ C+ C A
Rockets already have Ben Simmons but I think that Coon is too good to pass up. Coon is a mediocre rebounder so he could end up at sg. Rocky/Coon/Simmons is a nice 1-3. Coon is gets better the farther he gets from the basket, above average inside scorer, good jumpshot, very good 3PT shot. He has solid handles, and is a solid perimeter man to man defender though he does little else on D. What you see is just the tip of the iceberg as Coon is only 19 and has big time potential. In my eyes this pick is a no brainer.
2. Sacramento Kings - Rodolph Salembier C 7'0" 235 21 C+ C+ C- B B A
The Kings currently have nothing of note besides Ronan Robinson. They really need to nail this pick. I loved the notes except for the " Should develop into a really solid starter". Not what I want to see out of #2. He seems to do it all. He scores well inside and has a good jumpshot. He is an above average rebounder with good strength. He will even eventually get 2-3 blocks a game. Still will probably fall a few slots based on the last line in his notes.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers - Jewel Lyons PG 5'6" 165 20 D+ A- C+ B- C A
My favorite player in the class. I might take him first overall if I had the pick. I don't know how much the inside will hold him back at pg. He has big time pot and elite handles. Unlike the other elite handles guys we saw in the past he can score and hit 3s. If he has big time pot then I assume his D will come around. Also a solid rebounder for his position. End of the day he could easily be the best player in the class. Cavs have Burke but I can't see them passing on Lyons unless they really love Mulcahy.
4. Philadelphia 76ers - Mike Mulcahy C 6'11" 240 19 C- B+ B+ B+ B A
Yeah I know they already have Drummond, Kimbrough and Beech but they are tanking anyway so upgrading positions doesn't seem like a priority. Grooms without the blocks might be a good comparison. I might use him as a super backup as he can do it all except score inside. Or move him to pg after he is done with camps (assuming John wouldn't open his ratings and mess up his post d and rebounding). Could be very interesting if he ends up at pg though assumedly his per d isn't high.
5. Memphis Grizzlies - Cayetano Vicente SF 6'7" 205 20 C A- B B C A
First of three lottos for the Grizz. They have Mckeown and Baly and little in between. Can't believe that Kobe held on to morris, that move alone probably cost him a top 3 pick. Vicente is a good all-around player He has a deadly 3PT game though he is only decent from the line. A plus rebounder on the defensive end and quick hands which should have him top 10 in steals. He has very good potential so he should get even better. He was compared to Rudy Fernandez but his handles should be better.
6. Memphis Grizzlies (from Golden State Warriors) - Victor Booth SG 6'5" 220 19 C+ B+ C C+ C- A
Can't believe the Warriors pick ended up that high. Guess that is what happens when you move a top pg for very little. Booth's forte is his midrange game. Aslo should be a solid stats defender, maybe even getting a block a game, but he is getting picked here for his offense.
7. New Orleans Hornets (from Indiana Pacers) - Kip Fawley PF 6'10 235 20 D+ D+ F+ A- A- B
You must be kidding me. Not only did the Pacers gm do nothing to get better but he left aar with the 7th pick. Ugh. And Fawley looks to be a great fit for the Hornets. He is billed as an excellent defender who san steal and block at a very good rate. He is also an elite defensive rebounder. Who cares about offense when you can do that and you have Acy and Mcminn to fill it up.
8. Los Angeles Clippers - Long Kim PF 7'0" 205 18 B- C D+ C+ C A
Year after year I'm shocked to see the Clips this high. Play has enough young talent to take over the West this year or next year if he wants and run it for a decade. He doesn't have much up front so maybe it is time for him to draft a big with upside. Kim needs to get stronger. He can take off a year to work on his strength which is great for tanking teams. He gets pushed around currently in the paint so even though he has some nice moves he isn't effective against stronger bigs. He is also a solid ft shooter so if he gets stronger he could be a force offensively. His biggest question mark is his ability to improve his defensive rebounding enough. He has very good upside and the ability to +10 his strength but I don't know if that will be enough.
9. New York Knicks - Ulysses Mattson SF 6'10" 230 23 B+ C+ C- A- C B
The Knicks are set at the 2/3/5 but I don't see a pg or big that is good enough to take here. He could take Lincoln and become a great rebounding team but that is too much of a reach imo. Mattson is a very good inside scorer that isn't lost when he goes to the FT line or out on the perimeter. He has good pot so hopefully he can improve his ft shooting and lower his tos. Defensively he is solid both as a positional defender and stealing the ball.
10. Toronto Raptors (from New Jersey Nets) - Jean Jean-Louis SG 6'5" 200 17 B- C+ B- C+ C A
What happened to the Nets? I thought that I left them a championship team. And dj cleans up the marbles. Eh. What is with all these French guards? They all remind me of each other. Good shooter. High pot. Blah blah blah. What was the previous guy's name? Bouche? I don't know what he is doing so that probably means he isn't doing much. Don't like the overseas option.
11. Minnesota Timberwolves - Jae Hill SG 6'4" 226 22 C B- C A- C B
Harrison and Leonard are wasting away on Minny. They need everything in between those 2. He probably won't help much on offense but probably won't shoot much and won't hurt much either especially since his handles are solid. He can't do anything on offense besides drain threes. But that isn't why he gets picked here. He is a stud defender who is very good at stealing and is a great shotblocker.
12. Memphis Grizzlies (from Washington Wizards) - Lincoln McKissick C 7'3" 350 22 A- D D D A- B
Third lotto for the Grizz. Lincoln is a solid fit next to Baly. He will provide the offense that Baly can't and vice versa. Lincoln is 350 lbs and a terror in the paint. Really can't be stopped once he gets the ball inside. Only way to stop him is hack a shaq bc Lincoln has never learned how to hit a ft. He also has questionable handles. He will leave the defense to Baly but will more than hold his own cleaning the glass.
13. Orlando Magic - Vito Loving C 6'9" 245 18 B C- C- B- C+ A
They look to be in full rebuild mode so a boom/bust type seems to be the way to go. Shows A pot but some scouts fell that he won't improve much. He looks to be a decent player at this point but his possible upside is his selling point.
14. Denver Nuggets - Chauncey Schramm SF 6'7" 230 19 B B- C- C C B
Scramm looks like he could become a solid offensive threat. He isn't much defensively but he has solid handles and should be a decent rebounder. He alos has good potential so it will be interesting to see how he improves.
15. Houston Rockets (from) Utah Jazz - Tyson Jackson C 7'0" 280 19 C D C+ B+ B+ B
Houston can use a big and Jackson is the best one left. He won't be a star but will be quality defender/rebounder for years to come.
16. LA Clippers (from San Antonio Spurs) - Boo Harkless PG 6'5" 170 18 B- C B B- C A
I loved Boo Harvey growing up. If John is a St John's fan then Boo could be the steal of the draft. He is only 18 and is a big pg that can board. Only time will tell.
17. Toronto Raptors - Clinton Ayala PF 6'7" 240 21 B- C+ C C+ B- B
Good at everything, great at nothing, decent upside. That pretty much sums him up.
18. Milwaukee Bucks - Don Slaughter PF 6'8" 275 20 B+ D D+ C+ B- B
Slaughter is a good inside scorer as well as being really strong. On the other hand he isn't a good FT shooter. Worse still he is below average on the defensive end. And he has to problems. Above average on the boards and decent potential. Nothing exciting but it is pick #18.
19. Dallas Mavericks - Vinny Patty PG 6'1" 165 22 C B+ B+ C C- B
Like him but the " Might end up being a poor man's Steve Nash, a very poor man's Nash" doesn’t help. If he was just a poor man's Steve Nash then he would be late lotto. Not strong and a poor positional defender. On the other hand he has very good potential and looks to have offensive skills.
20. Los Angeles Clippers (from Phoenix Suns) - Odalis Swearingen SG 6'2" 199 22 C+ C+ C+ B D+ A
Decent starting ratings and big time potential is good enough for here.
21. Miami Heat - Zane Strouse SF 6'7" 215 22 C+ B C- A- C+ C
backup wing that could provide solid minutes.
22. Det Pistons (from Seattle SuperSonics) - Qian Zhou PF 7'0" 245 25 B B D+ C C C
instant offense
23. Detroit Pistons - Giampiero Torressani PG 6'6" 220 21 C B A B C+ B
best thing about him is his passing. Yay.
24. La Lakers (from Chicago Bulls) - Archie Bresnahan C+ B B C+ C+ C
Role player that has probably peaked.
25. LA Lakers – Isaiah Naan PG 6'0" 190 C C+ B- A- C- B
likely he's just a backup player
26. Atlanta Hawks - Brian Kundla PF 6'11" 257 22 C+ B- C- C B- A
Interesting skillset.
27. Sacramento Kings (from Boston Celtics)– James Madden SF 6'5'' 195 20 B- C- D+ B+ C+ B
Decent ratings. Maybe a solid backup.
28. Sacramento Kings (from Portland Trail Blazers) - Daniel Traylor SG 6'5'' 209 23 C+ B C B+ D+ A
See above.
29. Denver Nuggets (from New Orleans Hornets) - Timothy Boyer PG 6'2'' 202 22 C- B B B D+ D
He has decent ratings and he is a pg.
1. Houston Rockets - Andy Coon SF 6'9" 210 19 B B+ C+ C+ C A
