Let me start out by saying that I think that I really dislike how a lot of gms draft. I think in general gms overrate the high upside guys and underrate the ready to play 5th starters. Time after time gms take shots in the dark based on upside and are then disappointed.
Washington Wizards
1. Washington Wizards - Jingjing Wang PG 6'5'' 185 19 C+ B A C+ C+ A
21. Wazhington Wizards - Joe Morton C 7'0'' 285 22 B D+ D C+ C+ B
24. Washington Wizards - Jalen Bix SG 6'5'' 207 21 C A- C- C C- A
I always hate picking at the top of the draft because it is kind of a no win situation. If you pick the best player, well you were supposed to get the best guy. Wang came without a stipulation allowing him to play pg if moved to sf. So if he gets moved then he won't be able to move back wo a handling hit. I guess that he could still be moved to sfs for tcs but then you probably can't rc/ac him during the year without messing up his rebounding. Still, that is a problem we would all like to have. We will see how bad his to problem is in preseason. In any case the easy #1 pick. I am not a fan of the second Wiz pick. I think that Holzman is a superior player and was taken 10 picks later. Frankly I'm not sure that I would have taken Morton in the first round. He might look good on a rebuilding team but I don't think he will ever be a rotation player for a good team. I am intrigued by Bix. Will he shoot enough? Handles? Good outside shooter, gets blocks and steals and might be a starter equals a very solid pick at 24.
Grade – B+
New Jersey Nets
2. New Jersey Nets - Marcus Sapp SG 6'6'' 210 20 B B+ C+ A- C B
Brilliant move by the Nets trading for a pick that was clearly going to jump . I actually had a similar offer with a stipulation that if the picked jumped then I would get the other Magic pick. Definitely lucked out here. Nets new look inside offense looks interesting with sy/sapp or Ben/Sapp or Morris or Weller/quincy/sully. Famous last words – Sapp looks like there is no chance that he busts and the only question is will he be an all star or a superstar. Really looks like the rare player that has no holes in his game. I also like the Nets second round pick. Pedro Garrett SF 6'7'' 244 22 C C D+ B C+ B. He won't be a star but his rebounding is good for a sf and his B defense was borderline B+. Getting a backup sf at pick 22 in the second round is good enough for me.
Grade - A
Dallas Mavericks
3. Dallas Mavericks - Gerald Davis SG 6'5'' 215 20 B- B C- C+ C A
I really like Davis. This was a clear no brainer so I'll give Greg a B+ just for not messing it up. If I wasn't in win now mode I would have given thought to Davis at #2 though no notes on his defense would probably have kept him behind Sapp.
Grade – B+
San Antonio Spurs
4. San Antonio Spurs - Aaron Gifford PF 6'10'' 240 19 B- D+ C- B- C+ A
25. San Antonio Spurs - Kody Swift C 6'10'' 250 22 C+ C+ C+ C+ C+ B
Umm. No. Ugh. I hate this pick. I had so many people ahead of Gifford. I get the huge upside thing but his notes say won't block or steal. His jump shot probably needs significant help. If you have to take a pf why would you take him over Montgomery? Swift is a decent pick though I would have taken Childs or Holzman. They also got Claxton in the second round and he will be decent. Still shaking my head over Gifford.
Grade – D
Portland Trail Blazers
5. Portland Trail Blazers - Jackie Harrington SF 6'10'' 225 19 C C A- A- C A
I really like the pick by Marty/Spencer. He is the type of player that winning teams have and losing teams overlook. He probably won't put up the scoring numbers that others will but the difference that he makes on d and on the boards will make up for it. The only problem I have with this pick is that his objective value is hurt by the fact that a bunch of gms don't appreciate this type of player. I really liked their second round pick - Ken Holzman C 7'1'' 265 23 C+ C C- B- B C. Nothing spectacular but will be a 6th/7th man for a good part of his career.
Grade – A-
Houston Rockets
6. Houston Rockets - Evan Montgomery PF 6'11'' 225 22 B- C C B C+ A
27. Houston Rockets - Chico Claxton PG 6'0'' 175 23 C B- B- B+ C C
29. Houston Rockets - Sergio Iba SF 6'10'' 210 19 C B- C+ B C+ B
I like the Mongomery pick. Nice solid pick. Claxton is also a nice pick, especially for a cy team. Both guys are going to come and give solid minutes. I'm still not sure why anybody would rather have Grifford than Montgomery. Obviously it is possible that Grifford will be better but chances are better that Montgomery will be the better player and he has less of a chance of totally busting. And he can block/steal while Grifford can't. Like Iba also. If his handles are bad it is possible that he will never get serious minute but not a bad risk at 29.
Grade – A-
New York Knicks
7. New York Knicks - Terrance McCoy PG 6'3'' 215 23 B+ C B- B C B
17. New York Knicks - Courtney Page SG 6'5'' 185 20 C B+ C C D+ A
26. New York Knicks - Oscar Haynes PG 6'0'' 188 20 C C C B- D+ A
Interesting pick with McCoy. I had him a little farther down but he has nice starting ratings. His big minus is that it isn't clear if he can play in an outside offense. Solid pick though and with minutes I would be surprised to see him on the first team all rookie team over Wang. I don't like page at all. Somebody posted somewhere that he should have been a top 5 pick. Find that post and trade him quickly to that gm. Not a fan of Haynes but taking a shot at with a high upside guy at the end of the first round. The Knicks also had three early seconds and managed to end up with 2 guys that had notes. All three are kind of meh.
Grade – B
Orlando Magic
8. Orlando Magic - Tim Harvey PF 6'10'' 240 20 B- C C- A- B- B
Another bad pick. How does " solid backup post type guy" with limited upside translate into the 8th pick? I wouldn't mind having Harvey on my team but this was a major reach. At least Bundy got a player that he can keep tanking with.
Grade – D+
Toronto Raptors
9. Toronto Raptors - Dante Childress PF 6'8'' 255 23 B C C- C+ B B
I like Childress, though his value is hurt in this league by not being able to block. Really has no other holes in his game. Dj keeps getting solid players – Crawford last year and Childress this year – to add to a solid foundation. And I have had no luck getting him to trade me any of them.
Grade – A-
Minnesota Timberwolves
10. Minnesota Timberwolves - Leon Overton SF 6'6'' 222 22 B C C- B C B
16. Minnesota Timberwolves - Marcus Salling PF 6'11'' 245 22 B- D+ C- B+ C+ B
23. Minneosta Timberwolves - Darius Motley C 7'1'' 245 20 C+ D D+ C C+ A
I love Overton. I would have snapped him up if I didn't jump in the lotto. I had him 5th on my list. Think Alando Tucker. You look at him and think eh for a few years and then you realize that he is a star. Of course he would get drafted by a gm who doesn't ever answer my pms. Salling is garbage. He just looks decent compared with all the other garbage pfs in the draft. A shame because there were plenty of solid players left on the board at 16. I actually like Motley a lot more. Motley's notes are solid and they say he could be a solid starter.
Grade – A-
Sacramento Kings
11. Sacramento Kings - Donnell Watts SG 6'1'' 203 20 B+ B+ D+ C+ D+ C
12. Sacramento Kings - Stephon Allan PF 6'11'' 220 19 C+ C C- B- C A
18. Sacramento Kings - Quentin Newman SF 6'8'' 214 20 C+ B D C C A
Interesting draft. Watts looks like a very good scorer that won't do anything else. His notes said that he "doesn't have the ball skills to play PG in the pros". That could mean that his passing sucks or that his handles are an issue. Either way his scoring should keep him in the league for years. Not a big fan of Allan either. If you want to take a risk then I would have preferred Massenburg. Wouldn't shock me if Newman turns into the best of the three when all is said and done. Cronin is an interesting pick in the second round.
Grade – B
Atlanta Hawks
13. Atlanta Hawks - Ricardo Massenburg SG 6'3'' 206 19 C B- D C D+ A
20. Atlanta Hawks - Andre Lue SF 6'8'' 215 20 C+ C C- C+ D+ A
22. Atlanta Hawks - Jesse Foster PG 6'1'' 198 20 C B- A- C+ C- C
28. Atlanta Hawks - Ricardo Childs SF 6'9'' 218 24 B- C+ C B+ C+ C
Best draft in the league by far. Massenburg looks like he is worth the pick based on his pot being reset to 100 after his first three tcs (not clear if that means after every tc of just after the third but either way that is a major plus). He also gets 5 acs/rcs. Obviously far from a guaranteed thing but the pot reset and the extra rcs/acs make him a better risk then guys that just have good upside. Lue is another big upside guy which is nice at 20. Sfs with D+ rebounding tend not to last long so maybe he will be better off at sg. Idk but at 20 he seems to be worth a shot. Foster should have been taken much higher than 22. He is a superb ball handler. He can steal and looks to have a decent 3pt and jump shot. A poor man's murphy? Childs was in my eyes the steal of the draft. What is wrong with everybody? No reason that he shouldn't have been top 15. Ok, he has little upside but he is already a good rebounder for a sf, he steals, solid shooter, he blocks, no to problem. His notes say solid 5th starter. Not sure how he fell to 28. Smh.
Grade – A+
Utah Jazz
14. Utah Jazz - Phillip White PF 6'9'' 238 22 C+ B- C- B- B+ B
Another in a long line of meh outside bigs. Can't block or at least it doesn't say that he can. Not a fan of this pick. Of course maybe spencer really tried and made a good outside big? Stranger things have happened.
Grade – C+
Phoenix Suns
15. Phoenix Suns - Nicky Strong PF 6'9'' 230 21 B+ D+ D+ C+ C+ B
What? I never understand Skillz. Poor defensive rebounder. No blocks/stls. Mediocre mid range. Maybe Skillz knows something that we don't.
Grade – C-
Los Angeles Clippers
19. Los Angeles Clippers Keyon Kittles SG 6'6'' 208 23 C+ A- C A- C C
I like Kittles. Perfect example of what I was saying that gms prefer upside over current talent. Why did he fall to 19? His ratings look great. His notes say " solid shooter, defender and ball handler. Could start right away. Will get steals. can board. Mediocre upside.". So he can come in and start. Probably won't score a lot but if he can do everything else then you can always find guys that score. Besides the assumed lack of volume he has no other holes in his game.
