14. Steve
Why: The Spurs have been getting better the last few years, winning 50 and 52. Then Klay and Morris left in fa. Sucks for Steve and now he has a real challenge. He didn't move Bynum quickly enough so he is already 5-7 games behind the top tankers. On the other hand there are only 9 teams trying to make the playoffs out west. Does he try to make the playoffs and then rebuild, either at the deadline or the offseason, or does he dump bynum now? To make matter more complicated Bynum is expiring so he could be left with nothing if he waits for the offseason. Besides bynum he has little of interest on his roster. Young has turned into a solid 5th starter type and len looks ok. Westbrook is a disappointment. In any case, steve's best case is making the playoffs and moving Bynum in a deadline deal. Can he pull it off? Gotta send out those pms.
13 Marty
Why: Before making the move to commish he was around here. He hasn't done much since he came back and what he has done has been meh. I think that he is overrating Franklin by a good deal and Selby is clearly not a pg. Ibaka is a beast though. A couple tanking years to get acclimated and Marty will be back up to speed. At least I think that he will be.
12 Bundy
Why: Not sure why he isn't trying to win this year but props for being able to lose with Faried and Lillard. Lillard is already one of the top pgs in the league and faried is a shotblocking stud. Add that to his picks during the next year or 2, max cap in the offseason, Vonleh and Randle and mil 17 and cle 16-18 and you have a team that could be a force for the next decade. Of course that is in theory; Bundy's job is to make that into an actuality.
11 Jiggy
Why: He is at the end of a very good 7 year run in which he made the playoffs every year and won over 55 games 4 times. And he won a ship. He has some interesting young talent – wcs, redd and mendez – but I guess that is more john than Jiggy. For the same reason I guess there is no point in discussing his current rebuild.
10. Don
Why: His team has been dominant since he took over from Biggie. He has won over 50 the last 5 seasons, winning 57+ the last 4. He hasn't been able to get a ship which leaves him open to all the BBS trolls. He hasn't done a great job managing his cap and had to give up a pick to get under this year. He has to make moves to rebuild and would do well to do so before the trade deadline. Lowry and Gay should be able to fetch nice prices and if he can avoid having to resign them then he should. Pleiss has top value and just dump Redd for expiring if necessary. Yes I do think that Redd is worth a pick but I would always rather dump the guy for nothing and get a top 3 pick then hold onto him for a pick and watch my pick drop 3-5 spots. A gutsier gm would have taken one last shot at getting better and trying to shut up the trolls before dismantling but if he isn't going to do that he should make sure that everybody is off his team as soon as he knows that he reset his cy.
9. Kobe
Why: Why is Kobe so high? These rankings suck. Isn't he the reason the "kobe rule" was instituted regarding trading futures? Yah. It is all true but this Kobe seems a much better gm. True, it might just be a fluke but this is where I have him now. Sue me. He does seem to be suffering from a slight case of Skillzitis – the disease of overtrading. Currently, except for Zeller, his players are 29+ so his window is closing. We will see how he does when he has to rebuild in a year or 2; if he will manage to do so at the right time and what value he will get for his players. Will he continue his quality gming or will he be the Kobe we all remember from last version.
8. Habes
Why: Eh, he really shouldn't be this high. Habes is pretty much living on his past reputation. Gotta put in more time to get better. But we all like Habes – except for Marty – so we will give him the benefit of the doubt. I will say this for him, a lot of gms come in and get killed in a deal to get their picks back. Habes didn't even try to get his picks back. His team is currently in 9th although since they have only played 16 of 36 at home he will probably improve. I kinda hope he improves bc I just moved his picks. Amare and Ben are both on meh contracts so he might regret not trying to get his picks back but we have all seen him put together top teams out of meh talent. Hopefully we will get to see the old Habes some time this sim.
7. DJ
Why: We all have different ways of keeping track and djs seems to be seeing how many trades he can win. He hasn't done much – at least not that I can remember – and he has only 14 playoff wins in 12 seasons and 1 50 win season. On the other hand he has done a great job with his current rebuild. One year removed from a 13 win season he has not only accumulated vet talent – AV, Deron and Humphries – but he has also hung onto his two best young players - Noel, Mirotic – as well as having Henderson and Ross who both suffer from not shooting enough. He is currently leading the East and while I don't think he will stay there he definitely has established himself as a force in the East for the next few years. His one major drawback is hating to lose trades. While that seems like a good thing it isn't always. Sometimes you give up a good young player for an aging player who is currently better.
6. HustlinDaily
Why: He did an amazing job with the Rockets before leaving . One of the few gms who has won 2 ships in this version. No history pages so I don't really remember what he had but I think that it was a Ming based team. He hasn't really done anything since taking over the Pistons. He has two great players – Cenk and KD – and nothing else. Not going to be easy to tank with those two so he either has to make move to get better or dump 'em and start over. Middle of the road isn't any good. They are both young enough to bring a very good return so that seems like a good bet. Or just bring in role players or older players and take a shot. Maybe try to get Redd? Do something to earn this ranking.
5. Nanz
Why: We all think of Nanz as a joker, first and foremost, but he is also one of the best gms in the league. He does a good job of getting players that play well together. He has had winning seasons 8 out of 12 yrs in this version. I was surprised to see that his high win total was only 51 bc I seem to remember that he had a really good team one year. I really wish there were history pages. Maybe I could take care of them for 4 acs and 3 rcs a year? What do you think John? What about you troll? Back to nanz – he had put together a solid team that should just get better as weller and murphy improve the next couple of years. The only player he has to resign is Millsap and he usually signs cheap. He will be able to keep his team together for awhile if he drops that Marvin Williams joke of a contract. I think that if nanz moves marvin and some picks for a couple of good depth pieces then he could compete with this team.
4. Aar
Why: I actually had him at 3 before I started writing but once I looked at some stuff I had to bump him down. Aar is a hit or miss gm and he doesn't seem to care about making the playoffs or 50 win seasons or anything except for a ship. I'm not a big fan of that type of gming. I mean we all know that Aar is a top gm but only 4 playoff appearances? His first 50 win season was last year. Kinda meh. On the other hand when he decides to try to win he does go all out. He jumped from 26 to 60 wins last year. He currently has the 2nd best record in the east and all of his core is 28 and under. He will likely lose ak47 as a cap casualty but I doubt that he cares much with an up and coming Yakimov. Alternatively he could try to dump Sy. Either we he will be around for years and will always be a threat to win it all during that time.
3. Play
Why: Known better as a troll than as a gm, he is still definitely one of the top gms in the league. But has he fallen off? Definitely. I'm not even trolling, he has and there is really no argument. While still one of the best drafters in the league (cenk, mac, Bernard james, selby etc.) he doesn't seem able to turn all that talent into rings. Unlike others he isn't afraid to take a risk but that in itself doesn't make him the best gm here. He had a total of 1 season with more than 50 wins in his 10 year stint with the Magic. Yeah he won a ship but that isn't anything particularly special. Taking over a team with top talent such as parsons, bazz and Davis and then tanking doesn't earn him any points in my book either. No real reason to even look at his current team bc he is mostly living of rcc's work at this point.
2. DBW
Why:3 finals, 2 ships, 2nd most wins, 2nd most playoff wins. Yeah it was because some idiot (erbes??) let him get Duncan and Shaq but we all get breaks; the best gms just take full advantage of them. Not sure if we will see a better 5 year run than the one DBW had in the first 5 years of this version, he won 59 games in his worst season and averages 64 wins. He rebuilt well and is coming off 58 and 59 win campaigns. He has a big offseason coming up with Lee and CP3 slated to be fas. He also is missing his next few picks. He will still have enough talent to either get in the playoffs them or to trade for his picks back. If he trades MKG in a deal for his picks back I will not be happy bc I traded them away. Don't do it DBW. Make those picks worth nothing.
1.Skillz
Why: 3 finals, 2 ships, most wins, most playoff wins. Only 2 losing seasons in this version (I only had one…just saying). Besides those 2 his worst season was 49 wins. It is kind of easy being Skillz because he builds teams out of other people's trash. His team is a freak circus. Pgs that can't hit the three, centers that can't rebound and pfs that can't do anything well. Ugh. I wouldn't start any of his starters if I had them. Well, maybe wall but definitely not the other 4. And yet he wins with smoke and mirrors. And he doesn't have this constant need to rebuild that plagues the league. He has no problem trading for a birdless James Simon because he will just find another if he bolts. At this point, he is the best gm around.
