After the list of the Top-50 Most Valuable Players in BBS was released, I thought that it would be a nice change of pace to exhibit those who are truly value-less and mediocre in BBS.
This is a list of the top-10 worst starters in the league with analysis of what it is that makes them so poor.
10) Dominic McGuire
SF 28 6'9'' 220 C+ C- C+ A C C
31.4 mpg 2.7 ppg 5.4 rpg 2.3 apg 1.8 spg 0.9 bpg 0.8 topg .283 fg% .655 ft% .000 3p%
I mean, I get it, he's a good defender, he doesn't turn over the ball, he blocks a bit, steals a good amount and he's a serviceable rebounder, but GOOD GOD is he bad on offense.
It's hard to put McGuire on this list because the Celtics are a very successful team with a good GM who knows what he's doing, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
That being said, McGuire puts up horrendous offensive numbers and is probably more of a liability as a starter than he is an asset.
9) Ben Mclemore
SG 21 6'5'' 195 B C+ C B C- A
31.6 mpg 10.7 ppg 4.1 rpg 2.0 apg 1.1 spg 0.4 bpg 0.9 topg .425 .825 .240
Very close to being declared a full-on bust. Terrible pick by me. McLemore is just average as hell.
Decent scorer, poor rebounder, okay defender, low TOPG, okay percentages, just a very run-of-the-mill player.
He's done nothing in his TCs, he's been RC'd and AC'd and nothing seems to help him evolve from mediocre.
There's really nothing that warrants him being a starter or even in consideration of being a starter at this point.
8) Michael Carter-Williams
PG 22 6'5'' 175 C+ B A- B+ C- B
39.5 mpg 11.7 ppg 5.0 rpg 8.1 apg 2.6 spg 0.2 bpg 4.3 topg .380 fg% .711 ft% .313 3p%
I'm not going to write Carter-Williams off as being a bust just yet, but his turnovers-per-game are sky high and his percentages are awful.
Let's just say that he needs a lot of work and right now, he should not be a starter on anything but a tanking team, which is obviously what the Raptors are going for.
With a bit of work on his handles, Carter-Williams could certainly be serviceable. With a few more TCs and some RCs and ACs, he could be a B- A- A A- C- C type player and although he'll always suffer from having high turnovers, he could end up being a dynamic player.
People were wondering how he fell so low in the draft and his high turnovers seem to indicate that those who passed on him may have been right to.
7) Kenyon Hanson
PF 22 6'7'' 221 B C C C+ B- A
27.5 mpg 6.9 ppg 6.9 rpg 2.0 apg 0.8 spg 0.3 bpg 1.7 topg .370 fg% .640 ft% .600 3p%
Hanson is awful, but he gets a bit of a pass on this list because he's still young and seemingly has high potential.
The Bulls have no intention of winning, so they're going to see what this kid can do. Thus far, all he seems to do is not block, turn the ball over, get the occasional steal and do nothing well other than hitting 3 of 5 three point shots.
For a guy who was selected 26th overall, not much should be expected of him, but he definitely should not be a starter by any means.
6) Rodney Williams
SG 22 6'7'' 200 B- C+ D+ C+ C C
34.9 mpg 9.5 ppg 5.2 rpg 1.0 apg 0.8 spg 0.1 bpg 1.0 topg .411 fg% .796 ft% .273 3p%
The second - but not the last - Raptor to make it on this list.
The only thing that justifies having a player this bad as a starter are his low turnovers per game and his average rebounding.
Everything else is pretty much below average. Not very good defensively or offensively and definitely wouldn't be a starter on any other team.
There are better free agents than Rodney Williams (and the rest of the players coming up on this list)
5) Steve Blake
PG 33 6'3'' 172 C B A- B- D C
34.9 mpg 7.7 ppg 3.2 rpg 7.7 apg 0.7 spg 0.0 bpg 3.4 topg .409 fg% .743 ft% .341 3p%
Steve Blake is the only point guard on the T-Wolves roster and is their starter by default.
If you want to lose games, Blake is a safe bet. He turns the ball over, is an awful rebounder, can't score and doesn't steal. He's pretty much everything that you don't want in a starting point guard.
Unfortunately for the T-Wolves, their Amir Johnson and Meyers Leonard frontcourt is losing them games and they should probably look to dump Amir right away if they want to successfully tank.
It's almost difficult to believe that a team with Blake at the helm is nearly at .500 and Amir and Leonard deserve a ton of credit for keeping the Wolves respectable.
4) Tony Mitchell
SF 24 6'6'' 185 A- D+ C- C C D
20.9 mpg 7.1 ppg 4.4 rpg 0.6 apg 0.3 spg 1.1 bpg 0.4 topg .381 fg% .596 ft% .000
Mitchell was just named a starter for the Bucks.
The awful percentages are what earn Mitchell such a high spot on this list.
If his percentages were higher, he'd probably be lower on this list, but his per-36 numbers are actually okay at around 10.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 2.0 bpg with 0.6 topg.
Despite those okay averages, his percentages are awful and he really has no business starting.
3) DeSagana Diop
C 32 7'0'' 300 C+ F+ D- B- B- C
26.8 mpg 5.7 ppg 8.0 rpg 1.8 apg 0.6 spg 1.0 bpg 1.3 topg .347 fg% .483 ft% .000
The second piece of the Bulls putrid starting frontcourt.
Diop can't score, is an okay rebounder and blocker and has the worst shooting percentages of any starter in the league.
To Diop's credit, he's got good size and can block shots, which makes him just a little bit better than absolutely useless like the next two players on this list.
2) Phil Huh
PG 24 6'2'' 209 C- B- A- C+ D F
13.9 mpg 3.4 ppg 1.0 rpg 3.3 apg 0.6 spg 0.1 bpg 1.4 topg .426 fg% .895 ft% .308 3p%
Total trash.
Just named the starter of the Golden State Warriors above Aaron Brooks and Devin Harris - yeah, good luck with that.
Huh being a starter makes everyone in the league say "Huh?" collectively.
His per 36 numbers are around 9 ppg, 3 rpg, 9 apg, 1.8 spg and 3.5 topg, which on paper doesn't look awful, but realistically, Huh has no business starting.
1) Allen Cooper
SF 22 6'8'' 200 C B+ C C+ C- C
30.7 mpg 5.0 ppg 4.9 rpg 1.8 apg 0.9 spg 0.1 bpg 1.0 topg .361 fg% .750 ft% .256 3p%
The last and definitely least Raptor on this list.
Cooper is the epitome of putrid, but may actually be, ratings-wise, the best the Raptors have as a swingman other than the also awful Rodney Williams.
Cooper is a bad rebounder, a terrible scorer, a bad defender and his only redeeming feature is his 1.0 topg, which is probably, shockingly above average for a starter.
DJ has done an incredible job of finding the bottom of the barrel talent to pair with Nerlens Noels and form a tanking juggernaut. Congratulations!
This is a list of the top-10 worst starters in the league with analysis of what it is that makes them so poor.
10) Dominic McGuire
