1. Los Angeles Clippers - Los Angeles Clippers - Shabazz Muhammed SG 6'6'' 223 19 B B C C+ C+ A
Grade: A
With the first pick in the draft, Broph tried to make it look like it was going to be between Shabazz and McLemore. Yet, I don't think anyone believed it. Macklemore is good but in terms of draft value coming into the league Bazz is 19 and already has better ratings. With the proper effort put forth to put points into him, Shabazz just looks like the easier choice to make, and the smarter choice. Now with the team he went to is a whole different story. Shabazz was originally supposed to go to the Bucks, but after a dispute with the commish, the Bucks were dropped 3 spots because their GM failed to follow simple rules. That makes the Clippers one of the luckiest teams when it comes to the BBS lottery, because somehow someway they found a way to land 2 number one picks in back to back seasons. What they choose to do with this lucks is all up to them, but the lotto is fairly kind to them.
2. New Orleans Hornets via Philadelphia 76ers - Ben Mclemore SG 6'5'' 195 20 B C+ C C+ C- A
Grade: B+
What a coincidence, the same team that picked 2nd last year gets to pick 2nd again. There for we have the same two teams that picked 1 and 2 last year are the same teams that picked 1 and 2 last year, and in that order. The Hornets however will not have the luxury to see the two guys they picked play together. Although they will be hoping to have one of the best young back courts in the league with Irving/Mclemore, so we'll see how that trade of Andre Drummond benefits them at the end of the day.
3. Chicago Bulls - Marcus Smart PG 6'4'' 200 19 B C C+ C+ C A
Grade: A
Coming in at 3rd the bulls had a choice, Bennett or Smart, those two seemed to be the next tier in the draft after Shabazz and Mclemore, but I think he has an outside shot at being the best player to come out of this draft. His notes point to him being the dark horse of the three, so with work I expect him to atleast be in the race towards the end of their careers. Not only that but Smart comes in at a position that is most needed to succeed in the league, PG. Although what I took from his notes was that he would probably be a better SG, even though he had the potential to be a very good PG. His outside game is his main worry, but with a few points put into that he should be able to get the push to over come that weakness. He's 19 so hopefully he has enough potential to bring him up a notch.
4. Milwaukee Bucks* - Anthony Bennett PF 6'8'' 240 19 B+ C+ D C C+ A
Grade: I//C
Now this is where the Bucks fell to, pick number 4, and although the old GM kind of screwed their hopes up of having Shabazz all to themselves, they still end up with one of the most promising players in the draft in Anthony Bennett. Bennett seems like he's going to be an offensive stud coming out of college. He already has the nice inside out game for a PF, the problem with Bennett though will be his defense. If his defense ever catches up to his offensive game, this kid can be really good. His notes point to the potential of getting better, but in what aspect of his game will he improve. That will be what Bucks fans are looking for in the near future.
5. 5. Golden State Warriors - Isaiah Austin C 7'1'' 225 20 B- C+ D B- B- A
Grade: B
The Warriors ended up with the first really tough choice of the draft, they have 20 year old Isaiah Austin staring them in the face with all the question marks about him possibly coming out too early. He's a very tall 7'1" with a thin frame, GMs worry about his size and how his strength will match up to the other very strong big men in the league. This kid clearly needs some guidance if he wants to succeed in this league, but if the effort is put in the benefits will probably be very good.
6. Seattle SuperSonics - Victor Oladipo SG 6'5'' 210 21 C C+ C+ A+ C+ B
Grade: C+
To be honest here, I like Oladipo, I just dont like him at 6. Here's why, he's one dimensional, and for a player to come into the league and be strictly defense there is not much more you can do to help him become a more all around player other than to hope it comes around. You dont want to stick point into a player that will never be good at offense to the point where he's contributing on both ends of the floor rather than just being situational. To me Oladipo will be nothing more than a role player, backing up the 2/3 positions rather than being a starter full time.
7. Memphis Grizzlies - Cody Zeller PF 7'0'' 240 20 B C- D B B B
Grade: B+
Interesting pickup by Memphis here, not a bad pick at all, I just want to know what they were thinking when they traded Kyrie. I thought they might look at PG after trading for Drummond, but to pair him wih a BBS ready player like Zeller is really intriguing. Beal/Zeller/Drummond looks like a nice core to me, and their GM seems to be really investing some time into what he's doing with them. So I have no reason to doubt his abilities to get the best out of the guys he's putting together. Thought they might take a look at Michael Carter-Williams here, but MCW had the same type of worries Kyrie had coming in, so I can see why they didn't go that route.
8. Minnesota Timberwolves - LeBryan Nash SF 6'7'' 220 21 B+ C D C+ C+ B
Grade: B
Now here's the thing, when a guy is given 6 hours to pick a player, and you have teams waiting in line to make their pick this pick should have been auto'ed alot more quickly. But nevermind that, I actually like the pick of Nash, he went right around where he was supposed to in this draft, though I question the time Cheato has to put into making a player like Nash work out. It's clear he needs a lot of attention right out the gate, meaning the guy needs point put into him quickly. From what I've seen, nothing leads me to believe the T-Wolves GM has the time to accomplish this. With a boom or Bust, you're either all in on the guy, or you're going to be disappointed.
9. Washington Wizards - Christian Watford PF 6'8'' 215 21 B C+ C C+ B- B
Grade: A-
Could Watford have gone before Nash? Yeah sure, but I don't see what all the fuss was that he didn't. I mean, Watford has just as many question marks as Nash. I dont know what his potential is like, and we all know how difficult it is to be a outside big in BBS and actually be successful at it. I was taking a chance here, although this may work out a lot better for me as opposed to me taking someone like Jamaal Franklin. This allows me to pair another big man along side Jonas and have 2 guys who can easily be my frontcourt for the future if all pans out.
10. Los Angeles Lakers - Jamaal Franklin SG 6'5'' 205 21 B+ C+ C C+ B- B
Grade: B+
Franklin falls right where he belongs in the draft, and that's making the top 10. I dont see why anyone would have him dropping any further in this kind of draft. Franklin has one known worry, and that's his turnovers. Now his turnovers were never really gone into full detail about, but to me a wing with turnover issues is alot easier to overcome, than a PG with turnover issues, hence the direction the Lakers could have gone with MCW, but to me it was definitely between these two, it was the other parts of their games that lead me to believe Franklin was the guy here.
11. Milwaukee Bucks - Steven Adams C 7'0'' 243 19 B- C C+ C C+ A
Grade: I/C
I'm just gonna come right out and say it, I dont think Adams has any business being the pick here. I wasn't too high on Adams after his notes, they indicate that maybe he is way too raw for his potential to take his ability to higher levels. Not only that, but we dont know quite yet who will step in and take over these Milwaukee Bucks, so I would have liked a safer option than Adams for this team, but none the less at the end of the day I think Adams will at his worst be a good little role player coming to the Bucks, the question is how good will he be and how quickly?
12. Toronto Raptors - Michael Carter-Williams PG 6'5'' 175 21 C+ C+ B+ B C- A
Grade: A-
The Raptors got a gift with MCW dropping out of the top 10 in my opinion. I think the Nas pick made room for someone outside of the top ten to get one of the guys they didn't think they would get. MCW just happened to be the one who fell out, and he could have easily been snagged at 11 by the Bucks. So to me the Raptors dodged a huge bullet, because if it weren't for that I dont think the get the same caliber of player at this pick.
13. Chicago Bulls - Alex Abrines SG 6'5'' 190 20 C A+ C- B- C- B
Grade: B+
Nice pick up by the Bulls here, they chose to go the rout of the more ready role players in the draft. A guy like Abrines wont give you 20+ ppg a night, but when he does shoot it, you know he'll put up great percentages. Abrines has a chance to be one of the most valuable role player assets to come into the league by far with his elite shooting. Trust me you dont often have the chance to draft someone with A+ shooting out the gate who can also defend a bit. If Chicago works to make him an even better defender, this guy is going to be highly asked for in trades.
