Before I answer any question I would like to note that no question relates to Jeff Green, the scoring machine and that Jeff was very insulted by the omission.
1. Welcome Greeme. Let's get things started. You raped the Lakers for Deron Williams and Bogut in a deal for CP3. How did these conversations start? Do you think Williams is better than Paul himself? Is this a good indication of how good your team would have been if Tyson Chandler stayed?
Well, first of all I didn't rape Nanz. Haywood is one of the most underrated players in the league; his numbers per 36 aren't far off Bogut's. his main problem is that he can't stay on the court. Norel is also somebody that will be a solid 3rd of 4th big for years. He could even be ACd into a starter. Cp3 is clearly better than Deron. The scoring difference alone makes me have to start a better scorer at sf and bench luc.
In any case the conversation started when Nanz was interviewed and wrote that cp3 was one of the players that he valued the most. I wanted to downgrade cp3 a bit and get a better big so when I saw the article I thought what would I have to add to get Bogut. Then he blocked them both – Deron and Bogut – and I figured that it would be a good time to offer cp3+ for the both. I know well the feeling of boredom and wanting to make a change so I figured that maybe I could get both for cp3 and stuff. I don't think that Deron is better than cp3 and I don't think a real argument could be made by a non-troll. Imagine if I didn't lose Tyson – I would have Deron/Monta/Jeff Green/Bogut/Tyson. Meh. It depresses me just to think about it. it isn't really a good indication because I downgraded at pg and gave up 2 depth pieces. I should have the team I have now + Tyson. Que sera sera.
2. Last year your team won 65 games, this year your team is 24-14 but seems more complete. Which team is better?
Last year's team. I think that if I made the right dc moves last year we could have easily won it all. I do think that this year's team has more options to play with so come playoff time I might be more dangerous, I wouldn't say better but I would say more dangerous. Jeff Green could be the difference though. He looked great the first sim. He scored and rebounded well and kept his TOs under control. He wasn't as bad defensively as I thought and shut down some good players, including Durant.
3. Who is the favorite coming out of the East, the Nets or the Hawks? How do you think you matchup with Atlanta?
I think that the teams are very close, with Atlanta being slightly better overall. Atlanta has better starters and we have more depth. I think that anything could happen in a seven game series and that the whole series will come down to Redd vs. Monta – whoever has a better series will carry his team. Off course dc changes could also have a factor – we seem to have a rebounding advantage and as I said before I have pieces I could play with. Maybe luc on Redd?
4. Any concerns out West? Who will be the Western Conference representative in the finals?
Suns are the obvious choice. They just ripped off the Wolves. I don't love Rubio at pg – I like Bledsoe much more – but Marion is a beast. They can be dominated by a team with bigs and good rebounding. Even though I think that the Hawks are better than the Nets, I like my chances more against the Suns and I am sure that they will be rooting for the hawks in a nets – hawks ECF.
5. You are the only GM in the league to never miss the playoffs, yet don't seem to get the credit of other upper tier GM's. Are you a top 5 GM? Why or why not?
Yeah, sure. Maybe. Eh, maybe not. Kind of depends how you gauge things. Look at the Hawks and Suns; they both made big moves for older guys – Redd and Marion. They are better in the short run but not in the long run. I want to overtake DBW for most wins. That shows consistency, the ability to retool and the ability to deal with cap problems. Some guys just look at championships. I don't think that is the only barometer of success and to be honest sometimes it is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, an injury here, a good matchup there can change everything. I like having a team that can compete for as long as possible. I'm not talking about making the playoffs as an 8th seed year after year but being one of the top teams in the conference year after year.
6. Hypothetically, you've been in a league for 20 seasons. In one scenario, you have made the playoffs 20 times but never won a title. In the other, you've made the playoffs 10 times and won one title. Which is a mark of the better GM? Which would you prefer?
Similar to the last question. I think that it is harder to make the playoffs 20 years in a row but some people are championship or bust types. I think that mediocre GMs will win titles (no, I'm not naming names) but you will never see them string together 20 yrs in the playoffs. If I could compete, and not just sneak into the playoffs, I would much rather hit the 20 year mark though I don't really think that I will be able to, maybe 15.
7. Broph did a test sim with a PG with "5" handles. Would you rather have current BBS Deron Williams or a PG with 100 everything and 5 handles?
Depends on what happened in the test sim I guess. If he had 100 everything I would probably take the pg with 100 everything and move him to another position, run a very fast offense and try him as a non-option. Hopefully he shoots before he turns the ball over. Would be interesting to see. Deron of course is a stud pg. He really can do it all, although I wish his 3pt shot would be better. You can't really go wrong with Deron and if I could only keep the other player at pg I would probably keep Deron but if I could move him then I would take the other guy.
8. Play gives you a lot of shit, but the Nets are currently the better team. Will the Magic win a title in two seasons, as Play says?
No. Play is overrating his youth. I like them all but within two years they won't be better than the nets or hawks or pistons. FYI -I love Milan Macvan and have been trying to get him since he was drafted.
9. Who are the 5 best GM's in the East?
Not in any particular order - Aar, DBW, Play, me and Repole. Repole and play have been disappointing in this version. Repole probably doesn't have the time anymore to test sim different dcs or whatever he used to do but is still a top gm. Play was gifted Cenk and LBJ and really was lucky to get the ship that he got. There were upsets and good matchups for him. Clearly that ship deserves an asterisk. Aar is a hit or miss gm – championship or bust. I don't like it but he does it well. Not sure why he gave me jeff green when he has my next 4 picks but maybe he just felt bad that he got my 4 picks for Brandon and not much else. DBW did a god job putting together a top team and not holding onto his players too long. Also didn't rip his team apart after one ship but rather put together a nice string. I'm on the list mostly because I like seeing my name.
10. GAME refused to give the Bucks their 1sts back in exchange for Baron Davis. Was he wrong?
Yes and no. I wouldn't take Baron because he won't push them over the top and combining Baron and TMac is having 2 aging very expensive players. Great players? Sure but you try not have 2 of them unless you think that it will get you a ship. While it is true that the bucks are a very late lotto, their pick next year should be top ten. If I was Game I would have tried to put together a three team deal with Andy who was desperately trying to get a pg. Andy gets baron, game gets a prospect or 2, preferably a big, and the bucks get their picks.
11. How does being in a different time zone affect your perception of BBS? Is it weird being online when no one else is?
It is interesting. From that aspect UOSL is better because there are a bunch of Aussies who are around. Kind of hard to find guys to troll when I am at work. On the other hand when I have time at night there are usually a lot of guys around. One thing I have learned is not to trade at night when I am really tired, no many how many PMs I get that it has to get done now (Skillz when he wants somebody is the worst). It is hard sometimes during fa and when I have a late draft pick because I can wake up and miss out on fa sims or get autoed. Also sometimes I just tell the Commish to keep it the same for the playoffs because I don't want to hold everybody up. On the other hand I occasionally get a deal done with somebody who is itching to deal and has nobody else to talk to.
12. Who is the worst GM in the league? Why?
If the list was updated it would be easier to answer - bbsfive.proboards.com/index.cgi?b....read=33&page=1. Maybe the Spurs gm? I don't really seem to get anywhere with him on talks. He has mediocre youth and is on the second year of his rebuild. He isn't losing enough and he has to decide this year about resigning decent players. He couldn't move Barbosa or Noah or Gallo for firsts or prospects that don't expire? If he isn't planning on resigning them then move them for expirings, at least he would lose more. If he resigns them there there goes his cap and he doesn't he should have moved them.
13. Who is your most valuable player? Williams? Ellis? Bogut? Childress?
Who do I value the most? Ellis. Of course it is more important how others value them so probably Deron, GMs love the low to PGs who can score. I don't know why the 30 ppg sgs don’t have top value but they don't. FYI – Ellis is over 85 inside, jump shot, per d and STLs so he can pretty much do it all. Bogut is the shotblocking/rebounder that everybody wants. So he might have more value than Ellis in the eyes of many GMs.
14. Cavs or Wizards, who is the best new GM and why? Do either have the right to call themselves a top 10 GM yet?
I think they are both middle of the pack GMs but currently I like the way that Washington has set up the team more. JV, Butler and Gordon I like. They should get a solid pick this year and be even better if the future. At some point they have to consolidate talent and move forward. We will see how well they manage it. Cavs have moved forward too fast. Rudy has one of the worst contracts in the league. I'm not a fan of Tyreke but he can still get better. I really like Melo and Darko but Darko is expiring and they don't have enough overall. Should have waited a bit before making their move. They either need a great tc or to rip somebody off.
15. It's 2020 in this version of BBS---will Greeme have won a title yet? How many playoff appearances are we talking? Will you ever rebuild?
9 yrs from now? 15 playoff appearances and 1-2 ships. I'm thinking about rebuilding after 15 but depending on fa and player development I might just wait out Childress' contract and then rebuild. It really all depends on what my team looks like and how reasonable Nanz/Aar/whoever has my picks will be about giving back my picks. I should have 3 top pieces in Bogut/Deron/Monta. I have 2 other very good pieces in BJ and Jeff Green. None are old and none are going anywhere anytime soon so I can really wait and see how my team plays before deciding.
