Ice Seat with Broph!
The infamous Ice Seat returns with a man who already has a stone cold heart. That's right, it's Broph. The man, the myth, the legend. Something tells me I might get brophed in this interview...
1. You made big splashes acquiring Marion, Dirk, Ben, etc. Do you think you have enough to win it all this year? What's keeping you from winning the championship, if anything at all?
Do I think I have enough to win it all? sure, I grabbed two 3 parts to the defending champions team, with Dirk, Lue, and Ben, while I have Perkins who I have to consider pretty similar to Mihm, though a better shotblocker, and Marion, who is at least as good as Redd, at least as they were last year, jesus Redd is killing it this year, amazing so far. We certainly have some of the best depth in the league, Roy is a sick bench combo guard, Ridnour is servicable if Lue goes down as a true PG, Turiaf is a stud shotblocker, so Id say we have enough talent easily. If anything is gonna hold me back, it would be that we are not a very good team when it comes to forcing turnovers, ranking near the bottom of the league. Then again, we also take better care of the ball than any other team, by a fairly significant amount, despite playing an uptempo offense.
2. You're clearly going to make your CY this year, barring some catastrophic injury bug in Denver. Which of the other GMs in their CY (aar, DJ, Habes, hype) are in the biggest danger of not being in the league next year in your opinion?
Lets just say aar is lucky he is in the east, he doesnt have much positive going for him right now, at 8-14. KG is not the franchise player he really needed, he has sick ratings, but his performance has always been sub par. His offense is pretty ugly, his D is pretty great, but blocks and steals wise he isnt. He has a poor outside game....I think of him a lot like I expect Dwight to be, pretty ratings, but in overall effect on a team he doesnt have the same effect that you expect by name and just looking at his stats. The team is pretty ugly still, so there is a worry. Prior to the Bibby deal, I woulda had to say Hype, which woulda been for the best, his tenure has been irrelevant so far, not sure he had done anything note worthy. It still has to be aar though, he doesnt have the assets that the 76ers have, picking back to back busts does that to a team.
3. "Brophing." It's a term penned by the affable nit wit greeme; usually referring to your practice of rating labelling and claiming your players are better than they are. What's your thoughts on this? Do you "broph" or are you sincere in your ratings?
Its pretty stupid really, because I am just as likely to take shits on my players. I never really talked up Dwight, I shit on him constantly, because I felt like he sucked. The players I tend to talk up, I talk up based on stats, or based on ratings I learn are great through RC's. I wasnt afraid to say I fucked up on the Roy over Aldridge pick...that doesnt mean Roy isnt great. Dirk is a sick player, yes, I shit on Kobe, but thats because I hate turnovers as much as anybody, and right now my team is better off having Dirk at SF, that doesnt mean Kobe isnt a complete stud obviously, not like Im gonna avoid him if a good deal is offered, it just means I dont like him over one of my players because he does something that I hate. If you stack the SG's, Kobe runs top 1 or 2, and is a top 10 player in the league, really, probably top 5 but I didnt feel like looking to make sure. Around the league, he has more value than Dirk, thats pretty evident, but to me, he doesnt.
To get back to the brophing though, I dont talk up shit players like Greeme loves to do, the guys I talk up that are on my team are studs, Tree Rollins, Alf Sjoberg, Ben Rollins. As I recall the origin of Brophing came when I called Ben Rollins a 28 ppg player in trade talks, which since he was doing 20 since i moved him to the bench, was not true on the stat sheet, so people called it lies, but, what they avoided was that for the first half of the season I had started Rollins at SG, and he did 28 ppg, but I moved him to the bench because I did not need scoring (this was a team that even after losing Rollins in FA for nothing went to the conference finals, then, won back to back titles). I dont talk players up that dont deserve the talk, I shit on my own players pretty regularly, but Greeme tries his hardest to make sure that Brophing stays a term to make it so nobody recognizes his consistent overvaluing and hyping of his own truly mediocre players.
4. The Celtics have been on top for so long that these questions are becoming a broken record. Are they still the best team in the league? If you're DBW when do you start the rebuild? Shaq and TD are great, but both are getting older and losing value, plus his future picks are spread out amongst a couple of team. After just completing a massive one yourself, what's the easiest road to a rebuild in your eyes?
Im not quite sure why DBW would rebuild, he still pretty clearly has one of the best teams in the league, he does need a better solution at SG, but the Shaq, Duncan, Nash trio is going to be impossible to stop still for another three years, as long as Shaq doesnt' retire. There is no reason to rebuild right now with one of the best teams in the league. Duncan is still one of the best players in the league, so you have nothing to worry about there, he can get his picks back pretty easy, so he should feel free using his picks to get value for his team, make it better. 3 straight conference finals has been a great run, 1 title with that team would certainly be a disappointment though. If he were to rebuild, Id use Nash to get my picks back, if you have to, make the price my picks and picks for Nash, then use Duncan to get a head start, the best young prospect in the league. There is no reason Duncan shouldnt be worth a ton, he has quite a few years left, and is a major stud...the kinda guy that could probably make a team pass their CY on his own with just average players elsewhere. There should be enough value out there that he can get a sick prospect and futures, if he wanted to go that way...that way he could avoid having to worry about his CY, and be back to winning faster.
5. Looking around the league, I personally believe we finally have like 25-27 really active GMs. Even Marty has picked up the activity lately. On the other hand, there's always people dragging us down. Take away activity and posting though, who are the GMs that need to be replaced based off of skill and are a detriment to the league in that way?
I honestly do not think J adds anything to the league at this point..., activity wise he isnt special, he is annoying as hell on the boards, and he hasnt been anything GM wise since since Ive been in BBS. I just dont feel like anybody else is as worthless all around as he has been.
6. This will be the first draft that you haven't really had a vested interest in, but I still want your thoughts. It looks very top heavy with Durant and Oden sitting on a perch, with guys like Marc Gasol and Jeff Green and Joakim Noah a big step below. What do you think Spence does with these guys in terms of ratings and potential? Will Oden bust? Any sleepers that stick out to you?
I think you will find, its Durant sitting on a perch. Oden wont be on a perch at all, maybe 4 years ago, but now that he is a bonafide bust, despite the massive talent he had, you cant put him as a number one candidate over one of the best players in the NBA...now, that doesnt mean you have to make Durant better than Oden here, but prospect wise, I get the feeling its gonna be Durant over everybody else, since in BBS4, the same thing occured, of course, it shit all over everybody, since Durant the "franchise changing" player, never became all that amazing, just a pretty good scorer mediocre to bad defender with a slight turnover problem...but neither did Oden. Oden is the pretty easy boom bust type candidate, and it wouldnt surprise me to see him Boom here. Marc Gasol blew up in the last BBS, same with Thad Young I believe. You have to watch Noah, Spencer has made him amazing before, but with Play not tanking, that takes away one reason for Spencer to do that. Until I see a draft file, and notes, its tough to say what direction Spencer goes, though I would expect Durant to be special here, cause the Durant in BBS4 woulda been dominant in this league with the lower ratings.
7. Let's put the microscope on a couple of teams that have underperformed to this point: the Knicks and Spurs. Both are built to win and both are sub-.500. Neither team has many assets to trade in terms of picks. What do you do if your either team? Who's in a better position to tank properly or to win properly?
Pretty easy to see that the Knicks need Al Jeff to step it up...Theyve traded for guys that shit the bed once they got them, Allen seemingly should be better offensively, Chauncey has just died since they got him, combined with Al Jeff tapering off and underperforming so far, and Bogut sucking, its just been pretty me all around there. He has a tougher time, right now, Al Jeff (who I still love and think is all the makings of a star PF) is underachieving so much that he is gonna have a hard time grabbing big value, leaving an aging Ray Allen. In general, Andy has been kinda fucked by trying to win too early, and thats killing his game. Sure, he has rebounding, but his offense is nothing special, and he has absolutely no D on that team right now. He needs an Artest, or I mean, anything...god that D is terrible.
The Spurs on the other hand have Tmac, meaning he should jump on the chance to pull the plug on that team. Tiger does have a reputation for being difficult to deal with, overvaluing aging players, and Kidd right now should not be asked to score as much as he is being asked too. His frontcourt lacks great talent, and thats gonna be pretty impossible to overcome with no real youth, without risking your future, so moving McGrady and Kidd for his picks back and whatever else he can get has to be the current agenda. He kinda got passed up by losing players in FA, and then the addition of teams trying to win in the West. His team should be fine in the long run since he has Tmac to trade though.
8. Skillz seems to have finally skillz'd himself into a tight jam. His latest trade that sent Bibby and Diop to LAC for Lee, Calderon and some picks seems to heavily favor the Clippers in terms of value. Has the man lost his touch or do you see a bigger move coming?
Come on, this is Skillz, in like 2 sims, he will have raped somebody else, and will win enough games it doesnt matter. I should know, he started off trying to trade with me. He got some pretty solid assets in that deal, Calderon is decent enough as a starting PG, the picks are solid if Hypes team doesnt come together, and even then I dont see that team as otherworldly or anything, it should be a solid mid first. And I love David Lee, he needs some camping love, but his offense with that outstanding jump shot shows all the signs that he could be a stud offensive player, and he is only in his second year. Skillz is great at turning mediocre looking teams into teams that win based off of the system, they never have great value, but they win.
9. Why is Haberman being so stingy with his players? I agree that he's probably not getting great offers, but he's going to get CY'd if CP3 and Gordon don't move for studs. He missed out on Pierce, what's left for him?
Gordon is a stud, so that can be put out to pasture there, the only way he should move Gordon is if he gets a PF/C that will help his team more than the difference between Gordon and Thabo. CP3 probably needs to go though, he should be able to fetch a decent enough PG, and a Post player..more than anything, he really needs to find a C/PF who rebounds, his team is awful there.
10. Kill, marry, fuck time. Your list: Marty, Play, Repole, DBW, Spencer, and Nanz. Lube it up!
Meh I fucking hate these, Kill Marty, cause I really dont care and he doesnt provide anything great to the league anymore...his activity would be nice in UOSL though, well, his BBS4 activity, Play seems the most feminine, so if Im gonna fuck anybody its gotta be him, and Marry? Repole, I guess, both of us are fbb geeks I guess.
11. Speaking of Nanz and lube... he didn't use any in raping GAME for Pierce. You didn't comment once in the trade thread, sitting on the fence? What are your feelings on the original deal?
I dont think the Pierce deal was as huge a rape as this says. Pierce was on a team with shitty rebounding, no other offensive options, so his numbers are mega inflated. He shot shit from the field, turned it over a ton, and played huge minutes, signaling that on a real team he isnt going to be capable of that.
And now I have to take that back, what I didnt know was that Game didnt have his next first...Az isnt bad, but the trade makes no fucking sense without his future firsts. I mean, had he had his future, or had it been arranged that he would get it, easy call. But yeah, Pierce is still heavily overrated.
12. We finally got our first PP! I'll play conspiracy theorist here and say Spence gave it to us because he finally thinks the ratings are too low and wanted us to boost them. Any substance to this theory?
None at all, Spencer pretty obviously felt bad that we were stuck on FA Day 4+5, for a day, then, that we had to wait for a sim, due to his entire family coming down with the plague, it was outta the kindness of his heart that he chose to think about the effect this was having on us, even when it was having a vastly larger effect on him, and as such we should be thankful for such a giving Commissioner.
(I expect no more injuries the rest of this season now Spencer, thanks)
No really, I see it as ratings are just fine, love the low ratings, and I think he does too.
13. Give us some predictions for the season. I like to go with MVP, ROTY, GMOTY, and finals. Who takes it all?
MVP goes to Baron Davis right now, high in assists, high in points, great rrebounding, and his turnovers arent outta control. FBB loves assists, and Baron is performing as well as anybody there.
ROTY goes to Rondo starting PG in FBB, great rebounding, almost 20 ppg, easy call on this one
GMOTY probably goes to me I guess, but since I said that it probably wont.
As for the finals, I love my team, no doubt, and think matchups the Celtics and Nuggets would be an awesome finals matchup, but positionally I give him the advantage easily at C/PF and PG, and while I have a huge advantage at SG/SF and Bench, I cant pick myself...even with a similar team to the one that just beat him in the east finals....
If I was CC though its Dirk for MVP, Roy for ROTY, Myself for GMOTY, and Nuggets win the title, actually no, cause those would at least be close to reasonable.
14. It seems to me that guys quit when bad things happen to them. Aar stepped down after some bad TCs, Sargo after he got hit with the min cap penatly, etc. Do you think there should be some rule put into place that if you leave because of something bad that you have to sit out an 'x' amount of seasons before you can come back?
I know Aar came back and took his crap team with 1 year on his CY, but a majority don't do that.
Its a pretty easy solution, if you come back after quitting like that, when you do, you must take the penalty you avoided, so long as it does not cripple the franchise in some way over what you woulda faced...so either stick the GM in a shitty situation, or give him the penalty he avoided. I hate when GMs bitch quit as well, but the Min cap isnt even that huge as it pertains to a penalty, he woulda had an easier time dealing with it, it woulda affected his team three years, but, only Josh Smith expires in that range of the players he would have to resign. That team was in great shape even with the min cap penalty, Josh Smith Millsap and Monta is as good of a youth corps as anybody...any team he gets is still probably going to be in a shittier situation.
15. What's your favorite part about BBS right now? That you finally have a winning team to follow and tinker with?
I was so fucking tired of losing, league is awesome right now with the ratings..the ratings are amazing, love that Perkins is a great big with B- D= ? B- B+ ratings, but the fact that my team is winning, and that the creation draft wasnt a total loss for me with Perkins coming up nice is a big deal.
Yeeeee thanks Broph! It's awesome to read answers from someone who actually knows the ins and outs of the league. Cheerio and vote up guys! Thanks!!!
